This book is not for everyone! by SLJ (NJ USA) 3 Stars

First of all, if bulimia has not touched your life, youv probably would not have gotten to read my review. My daughter suffers from bulimia and even I had a very hard time with the beginning of the book and the daily torture that bulimia brings to our main character. I had my 15 year old daughter read it as well. She was in tears before she reached page 30. Yes, bulimia is sad, but it is nice to see it actually talked about and that now my other daughter has an understanding as to what her sister is going through. I did not give it 4 stars only because I felt the ending just came about a bit too quick....and easy.

This one has been sitting on my shelf for a long time. I'm not sure why I was so apprehensive about reading it. I think I was scared after reading Wintergirls by Laure Halse Anderson. I have to be in a mood for books that drain me emotionally like that. Wintergirls was difficult to read, and I don't think I was ready to tackle something like that again so soon. But Purge was a lot different than Wintergirls. Besides the fact that it's about Bulimia and not Anorexia, it also very easy to read. Not saying that it was "enjoyable" to read about girls struggling with their body weight, but I enjoyed Janie as a character and I reading her story. I loved that this was about more than just Janie's struggle, this novel really shows that eating disorders are a universal epidemic. That it's not only girls, there are boys too, that it's not only teens, there are adults as well. It's heartbreaking to know that the author used her personal experience to write this novel. But I'm glad she shared her experience and hopefully has been an inspiration. Despite the topic of this novel, it had an uplifting message.

Purge took me a little while to get into because of the dry writing style. But, once I got past the first ten pages or so, I was drawn in. Janie's diary entries were the one thing that kept me going - they were well-written, fresh, and gave us a good look inside her head. I couldn't relate much to her but I did enjoy reading about some of the secondary characters - Tom in particular. Since there's a large group at the clinic, many of the characters faded together. I felt that Littman could have given them better personalities and made them more distinct, but since the novel was so short, it didn't completely take away from the story. The interactions between characters, especially at meal times, were eye-opening. There isn't too much more for me to say about this one. It was good but not remarkable. I felt there was so much potential in the story and wish it had been a little longer, with more character development. If you like books about eating disorders, you'll probably enjoy this one though. harmonybookreviews.wordpress.com

a harrowing tale of eating disorder by Ward J. Lamb (slate hill, new york United States) 5 Stars

"Janie" goes through a treatment clinic with all the complications of recovery-Starvers and bulemia in tow. The main character could be more revealing from an intrinsic psychological point of view. However for the youth or adult referencing this problem this book takes yopu on a journey of the afflicted institutionalized ED patient. Knowing several people with this issue the book grounded me to the book and it's central character. The book makes it clear that eating disorders are masks for deeper problems and are complicated to say the least.
