Solid, but needs some caveats by Stephen J. Snyder (Lancaster, Texas United States) 4 Stars

This is a solid wrap-up of much of Branden's previous (to this) work on self-esteem. While not everybody may be able to (or at least, may want to make the effort to) get into the mental actions of his sentence completion method, even for fidgety minds or bodies, I believe the effort is worth it. That said, as with any Branden book, this is not a substitute for professional counseling. And, self-esteem work like this will not touch major endogenous depression, nor externally-driven things such as the aftereffects of PTSD. Unfortunately, Branden doesn't always make that clear.

Edgar Review by Mr. Allan R. Edgar 4 Stars

The book contains "to the point" information on what is self esteem and how to regain it. Self esteem is your core value and the book uses good examples for illustartion.

Don't be fooled by D. L. Alpaugh 1 Stars

The sub-title of this book is very misleading. It does not contain "an action-oriented approach" to raising your self-esteem - unless you count sitting down with pen and paper as an action. The book is centered on sentence completion exercises where you write the beginning of a sentence at the top of a page ("One of the things I dislike about myself is...", "One of my emotions I have trouble accepting is...") and then complete the sentence with whatever comes to mind. For some unexplained reason each sentence requires its own sheet of paper; and there are a lot of them, so be prepared to go through a lot of paper. Sure, completing sentences technically counts as an "action". But if you're like me, "action-oriented" implies some sort of cognitive-behavioral therapy that gives you exercises to go out and do in the world, not sitting alone and writing out your thoughts. For someone with social anxiety the last thing I needed was more solitary introspection. Branden gives examples of breakthroughs that his patients had doing sentence completion with him in therapy; but alas, the practice helped me in no way. Your mileage may vary, but I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

NOT IMPRESSED by Deaf Writer (Grand Rapids, MI United States) 3 Stars

This book talks about "honoring the self." It covers such things as the importance of self-esteem, self-concept, self-acceptance, liberation from guilt, integrating your younger self, living responsibly and authentically, nurturing, selfishness, and more. Seems like it would cover all basis, right? But this book is bland and reads like 100 other self-esteem books. It's just not that impressive. If you've read other books on how to feel good about yourself, spare your time to read this repeat. If, however, this is your first attempt to find help, this book may offer you the tips and tidbits you need. I, personally, was not impressed and, frankly, quite bored.

excellent writing & content.................however by i.a.m. (usa) 5 Stars

i found this book upon sheer chance (or should i say, LUCK) at a time i believed i was looking for something but couldn't quite put my finger on it. as i went thru the book, i found many things amazingly accurate about myself (and therefore could easily relate to it), and went thru it slowly, working on myself, *nourturing* back my emotional health. i think ultimately however, these self-help books are exremely subjective, and it all simply comes down to which one YOU feel you can relate to the most. i give it 5 stars cuz i felt i could relate to the content AND how knowledgeable this author is w/o being "another psych book". now, if you're looking for a simple motivational, more technical, or some in-depth "workbook", than perhaps another book would be better. this is a SELF-help guide, not to be intended as a permanent crutch or a stand-in therapist. (or if you're looking for someone ELSE to somehow "fix you", or some other kind of easy "magic", then you most certainly have come to the wrong book!)
