Disappointed by WKT 3 Stars
November 15, 2009
After reading the glowing reviews and receiving a recommendation for this book from a nurse friend, I am sorry to report that I am disappointed. I will admit that I haven't read this book from start to finish, but after going through portions that are immediately relevant to me, a first-time mom to a 3-month-old, I have found that the advice has contradicted other things I've read, namely about breastfeeding. I also find the tone to be too cut and dry. The author doesn't leave room for variability in kids, such as that newborns should feed only after a certain number of hours. Babies are all different and there is a large range for normal. I much prefer the books published by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The book is very informative and helpful in times of need. The material is written in an easy to understand way, and contains the most important information. A worthwhile purchase.

This book should be part of your collection. by Pen Name (MA) 5 Stars

This book covers everything I could think of and more. It's nearly 3 inches thick with newsprint pages and packed with information on "health", not "parenting". My disclaimer is that my little one is not yet here so I haven't actually had to put the information to the accuracy test. Is organized in such a way that you can "take it in" in chunks as your child develops.

My Pediatrician recommended this book to me, so that I wouldn't have to wait to call the office to know what to do. It's what they use to help parents know what to do about almost everything. From ear infections to picky eaters- it has what you can do at home, what to look for to call the office right away, and what to look for to call in 24 hours. I have found it very useful to decide if I need to take the kids to the office, or if I can just help them at home and avoid a trip to the doctors. It also gives you several different approaches to behavior delemas, that I really appreciated. Then I could create one that works for my child. I highly recommend it.

This book will help put your mind at ease when your child is sick or hurt by beaky's mom 5 Stars

I've used both the first and second editions of this book for the past 7 years since my first child was born. The format makes it easy to find the information you're looking for quickly (a plus when your child wakes up sick in the middle of the night or on the weekend when the doctor's office is closed). For example - my child has a fever, what should I do? When should I call the doctor? When should you take your child into the office? Using the decision tree at the end of each subject section - I almost never need to call the doctor with what would turn out to be a routine question and avoid unnecessary visits to the pediatrician's office. In fact, at my daughter's last check up, the nurse commented they never see us! It's not that my kids get sick any less than other kids, it's just this book enables you to handle the routine health issues of childhood more effectively. And if heaven forbid we ever have an emergency, a section of the book is dedicated to that subject too. The child raising advice I use less often. But for health care, I recommend it for every new mom.
