EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description Hyacinth Bucket - pronounced "Bouquet" - star of the BBC1 comedy series, "Keeping Up Appearances", imparts her personal views on protecting one's social standing. There are sections on etiquette in the home, entertaining, social obligations, how to strike up an acquaintance with members of the aristocracy, and improving the mind. They all give an insight into Hyacinth's philosophy of life, developed through years of candle-light suppers and charity sub-committee meetings. | | A Must for Any Keeping Up Appearances Fan! by Sylviastel 5 Stars August 05, 2009 For those of us who have enjoyed the episodes of Keeping Up Appearances, they will enjoy this book for it's fans. The book is written form mostly Hyacinth's twisted point of view as she tries and tries to climb up the social ladder. Despite the constant negativity around her, neighbors who hide out of sight when she's around. When the church ladies do their best to avoid her as possible or the town's ladies league trying to escape her wrather. Hyacinth Bucket or Bouquet is not some monster but a woman who seeks the higher standards of living only to come up short in the end with her wimpy husband, Richard, her slobby sister, Daisy, and brother-in-law, Onslow, and her less than pure younger sister, Rose, and of course there is Daddy who doesn't have all his marbles there anymore and acts like a child. She is surrounded by her best friend and neighbor, the lovely Elizabeth Hawksworth Warden, who puts up with her nonsense and prays that she doesn't spill anything in her house and her brother, Emmett, who is director of the local operatic musical society. It makes Hyacinth want to be put on stage but she doesn't have the voice and when she sings, she sends Emmett running as fast and far as possible. She can't take it that she doesn't have talent. Then there is the Vicar and his jealous wife who are in the constant throes of Hyacinth's shenanigans. Then there is the other sister, Violet, who married a successful turf accountant who lives in a big house with a room for a pool, sauna, and a pony just not in the pool. She's married to Bruce whose strange behavior and actions include dressing women's clothes, climbing up trees, and riding about on a fake horse called Thunderbolt and wanting to play Maid Marian. If you haven't seen the show or if you have, you know what I'm talking about. Hyacinth Bucket is Roy Clarke's brilliant creationa and I only wished that there were more episodes to watch.
