Product Description
This book has been created for patients who have decided to make education and research an integral part of the treatment process. Although it also gives information useful to doctors, caregivers and other health professionals, it tells patients where and how to look for information covering virtually all topics related to narcolepsy (also Gelineau's Syndrome; narcoleptic syndrome; paroxysmal sleep; sleep epilepsy), from the essentials to the most advanced areas of research. The title of this book includes the word official. This reflects the fact that the sourcebook draws from public, academic, government, and peer-reviewed research. Selected readings from various agencies are reproduced to give you some of the latest official information available to date on narcolepsy. Given patients' increasing sophistication in using the Internet, abundant references to reliable Internet-based resources are provided throughout this sourcebook. Where possible, guidance is provided on how to obtain free-of-charge, primary research results as well as more detailed information via the Internet. E-book and electronic versions of this sourcebook are fully interactive with each of the Internet sites mentioned (clicking on a hyperlink automatically opens your browser to the site indicated). Hard-copy users of this sourcebook can type cited Web addresses directly into their browsers to obtain access to the corresponding sites. In addition to extensive references accessible via the Internet, chapters include glossaries of technical or uncommon terms.

Not a Helpful Guide by A. Brackett (Reston, VA) 1 Stars
December 01, 2006
Unfortunately, this book is not a very helpful good for patients of narcolepsy (or other sleeping disorders). The book was published in 2002 and several of the websites included are no longer accessible. In addition, the list of available "free" information for narcolepsy patients is rather sparse, while more attention is focused on all the possible medical journals and expensive textbook materials. While the book editors claim that this source was written with patients in mind, it clearly has information guiding doctors to additional technical sources on the subject matter. Also, the clinical researches listed are all since ended at this time, and only one website link is provided to obtain listings of more current clinical trials. I am disappointed with the lack of information I found in this book, as it only reiterated the basic definitions of the diagnosis of narcolepsy and elements related to that disorder. All of what is in this book is easily accessible for free via a google web search. It is definitely not worth the $25 and shipping costs.
