Not a very good book for the price! by J. Daigle (Destrehan, LA) 3 Stars

The cook book has some general information on cooking and kidney diets but there aren't a lot of receipes. There are only a handful of receipes and seems cheaply put together. The book is over priced for what you get! I was very disappointed! Not worth the price. A much better value and has been more useful is " The Cleveland Clinic Foundation Creative Cooking for Renal Diets". It is a much better value. Better receipes, MORE receipes, easier..regular meals and I love how ALL of the nutrition information is listed in the back of the book. It makes it so much easier when I cook a meal for my husband that I know exactly how much potassium, calories, fat, protein, etc. are in each meal and each serving. Buy "The Cleveland Clinic Foundation Creative Cooking for Renal Diets" instead of this one...you won't be disappointed.

Gourmet? You have got to be kidding! by Sally Barnett (Sierra Madre, CA) 2 Stars

I am so thankful I didn't buy the $73 edition. I was not impressed by the meagerness of the recipes - many of which looked like they were lifted from Betty Crocker in 1964 - honestly - Cucumber dill dip and Shortcake with Strawberries topped with Cool Whip? However, the information provided about calories, potassium, phospates was informative but could be found on any website pertaining to CKD. Overall, disappointing. The fillers - napkin folding and quick fixes were designed to add pages and were completely unneccessary. I won't even take this to my nephrologist for fear of being laughed out of his office.

Not good value for money spent by S. Swanson (Jamestown, NY) 2 Stars

This book got mixed reviews and I took a chance on it, but shouldn't have. It's honestly something that the average person who knows the basics of a renal diet could put together. $20 is a steep price for this small thin paperback.

Twenty dollars seemed a bit stiff for this modest collection of recipes with almost a home-made production value. However, what is there is of good value to those interested in this very narrow niche of specialized cook books.

Recipes are not very inspiring by Shawn T. Rutledge (Phoenix, AZ United States) 2 Stars

I got this for my wife who has CKD. First I was underwhelmed with how small and thin it is, and generally looks like an amateurish effort designed to make some extra money on the side for someone. So to me it's not worth the price, and my wife also thought so. The front material about CKD in general is not so hard to find, so we didn't buy the book for that. The nephrologist sent her to a dietician who covered the basic dietary advice pretty well. If you were not so well informed then maybe this material is good reading. Then I started looking at the recipes. They seem kindof bland and boring, and there are no photos. I could probably cook most of those things without a recipe at all. I'm cooking several recipes out of this book regularly instead: The New Glucose Revolution Low GI Vegetarian Cookbook: 80 Delicious Vegetarian and Vegan Recipes Made Easy with the Glycemic Index which I highly recommend. Vegetarian, organic, low-GI food is great for everyone, and for CKD as well (you will have fewer toxins to eliminate). Some of the techniques, ingredients and flavors that book recommends are a bit more on the exotic side for typical Americans, so it will continue to be exciting for a few years I think. That makes it possible to survive on a vegetarian diet (at least partially) without missing your old habits so much. You just have to watch out for the known-bad vegetables (high in potassium or phosphorus), and protein if your CKD is advanced to the stage that you need to reduce it.
