| | People are complex, social creatures by Anthony M. Faaborg (US Air Force worldwide) 5 Stars December 28, 2007 This text is an excellent introduction to the field of social psychology, and covers the popular topics within this fascinating area of research. The text begins with a brief history of social psychology, and also takes pains to assert that good social psychological research follows the rigorous discipline of all good scientific research.
After these introductory chapters the text dives into the popular areas of social psychology -- self-esteem, aggression, social psychology in the legal arena and in business, just to name a few. Perhaps the most important lesson to be learned from reading the text is this: People are complicated and complex social creatures, and it is quite dangerous to make any kind of assertion about motivation or reasoning when considering a particular person in a social setting.
As a survey text the material is good -- it introduces the foundational concepts of social psychology and provides more than adequate bibliographic material. However, as a survey text, the book is NOT aimed at those looking for a great deal of depth. On the other hand, door is open for those who want to research the bibliographic references!

| Culture of Honor: The Psychology of Violence in the South by Richard E Nisbett (Author), Dov Cohen (Author)
In this brilliantly argued book, the authors explore the reasons behind the higher rate for homicides among whites in the southern United States. They discover that it isn't socioeconomic class, population density, the legacy of slavery, or the heat of the South; it is the traditional "culture of honor" -- in which a man's reputation is seen as central to his economic survival -- that makes the difference.
