Product Description
Here is the classic, much-read introduction to the craft and history of mathematics by E.T. Bell, a leading figure in mathematics in America for half a century. Men of Mathematics accessibly explains the major mathematics, from the geometry of the Greeks through Newton's calculus and on to the laws of probability, symbolic logic, and the fourth dimension. In addition, the book goes beyond pure mathematics to present a series of engrossing biographies of the great mathematicians -- an extraordinary number of whom lived bizarre or unusual lives. Finally, Men of Mathematics is also a history of ideas, tracing the majestic development of mathematical thought from ancient times to the twentieth century. This enduring work's clear, often humorous way of dealing with complex ideas makes it an ideal book for the non-mathematician.

Inspiration for the "boy" in me by Saurabh Mahapatra (Boston, MA) 5 Stars

Do you want to get inspired by "men" who transcended beyond human thought and did something extraordinary that is hard to believe? Read this book and get inspired by what is true genius. It always inspired me when I was a young boy-the stories read like folklore and some have tragic endings but hey good things always come at a price. Dr. Bell does his part in evangelizing the field of mathematics by romanticizing it in this book.

the best single volume history of mathematics? by W. Frederick Zimmerman (Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA) 5 Stars

This is the book that turned John Forbes Nash (A BEAUTIFUL MIND) on to mathematics. I'm not enough of a scholar to know if it's the best single volume history of mathematics, but I can't imagine many better. This is a sturdy modern edition -- handsomely, although not, perhaps, beautifully, printed.

Should be read by all Maths students by Klaus Vasconcellos 5 Stars

Wonderful book! I discovered it long ago in the university library when I was just a first-year undergraduate student and I really loved to read it. Prof. Bell presents us with fascinating stories of the most important mathematicians in History. The book is very entertaining, since we read about the lives of those great men, not only as important scientists but also from the human perspective, with their dreams, passions, ambitions, frustrations and victories. Now, as an associate professor at my university, I fully recommend it for everyone who is interested in History of Mathematics Men of Mathematics (Touchstone Book).

Wonderful book! by a reader 5 Stars

This is a truly wonderful book! As a female scientist I did not feel that the author was sexist. He treats women fairly. However, there is not a lot written about female mathematicians in Bell's book, because at that time there were not many of them (in fact there is a book about that "Women in Mathematics", which I have not read, which should be the appropriate book for the ones interested in women in mathematics). I was totally delighted by the stories in the book. I just started to study again many of the subjects he discusses: Hamilton-Jacobi equations, Newton's original writtings, etc. I was so amazed that a mathematician (Bell) had also an amazing talent for writing. Read the book! I am sure you will love it too!

Cornerstone Reading for Math-Magicians Among Us+ by Magickal Merlin (Death Valley-SoCal) 5 Stars

This was a great read on historical mathematics.I'm not surprised it's still considered an intellectual classic for numerophiles around. The book is a bit dated. So,if you don't care for classical mathematics and the times the mathematians lived, then you will be bored silly.I love history and the stories about the various historical math-builders,who added something to the development of number functions. They were rebels and magicians ,who dared to question the known laws of the judeo-christian society. The math rebels defied the accepted rules of the church, and challenged the views of the chief pontif and other elder preachers. The names of these mathematical men are known to today's students of calculus, yet their lives and philosophical views were not. This book is still a great place to start,on your path towards a better understanding of the evolution and progress of modern advanced mathematics.Mathematicians simply use numbers and formulas to calculate matter and their functional processes within Nature. The layman sees this as magical wizardry. The true mathematian sees mathematics as a spiritual communion with the forces and elements of Nature. This book has inspired and enchanted countless math readers ,into inquiring and confronting one's own surrounding social mores, that had fettered past pursuits of mathematical freedom.

And, while tracing the development of European mathematics, the authors do not overlook the contributions of Chinese, Indian, and Arabic civilizations. Without doubt, this is—and will long remain—a classic one-volume history of mathematics and...

The colorful lives of these women, who often traveled in the most avant-garde circles of their day, are presented in fascinating detail. The obstacles and censures that were also a part of their lives are a sobering reminder of the bias against women still present in this and other fields of academic endeavor. Mathematicians, science historians, and general readers will find this book a lively history; women will find it a reminder of a proud tradition and a challenge to take their rightful...
