| Review of A Midwife's Tale The Life Of Martha Ballard by C. Egan 3 Stars September 16, 2009 I actually was a bit disappointed when I read the book. I thought it would have more of the actual diary entries, and less of the author's interpretations of what Martha was trying to say. I think if it had, it would have been a much more interesting read.
| | Buy a book on Amazon by Dot the Cake Lady 5 Stars June 04, 2009 This was a new experience for me and Amazon helped me find what I could not find in my home town library. I love history, and wanted to read this book,"A Midwife's Tale" because it had been referred to in another book I read. I got a great deal and I intend to use Amazon often in the future. Thanks so much! You made it so easy for me.
| | Book by S. Buxton (Western NY) 5 Stars December 30, 2008 This is a very good book. My husband is from Maine so I knew where all the towns/cities were. It's very interesting. It has a lot of history in it and it's an eye opener for how women used to live. It has bits and pieces of the diary, it's not the whole diary but just the same it is very interesting, a good read.
| | Not worth it by M. Stoll (Los Angeles, CA) 1 Stars November 25, 2008 I bought this book after seeing a review on another site that indicated it was an interesting look at life for women in the late 1700'- early 1800's. The story is extracted and told from the journal of a midwife, Martha Ballard, who lived during that period. The journal contains entries from the daily life of Martha Ballard, from which the author attempts to tell a story. Unfortunately, the author's style of writing tends to be somewhat unorganized, uses a very dry recount of daily life and leaves little room for any story to develop. A very boring and disappointing book.
| | Poke my eyes out boring by Jazzematazz (LandHo, MD United States) 1 Stars October 16, 2008 This book is probably a dream to history buffs of that era. I, however, am reading this book for a college class. I am on page 91 and so far it is one of the most boring and dry books I have ever read. The diary entries are not so bad. The massive amount of commentary surrounding the diary entries...that's what's cooking my goose. Too much long, boring, redundant, dry commentary.

We see her borrowing from her neighbors, loving her husband, raising -- and, all too often, mourning -- her children, and even attaining fame as a heroine of...

Joanne Freeman shows how the rituals and rhetoric of honor provided ground rules for political combat, how gossip, print warfare, and dueling became accepted political weapons, and how the founders jostled for political power in...
