Informed consent not mentioned by D. P. Birkett (Suffern, NY USA) 1 Stars
July 09, 2007
A description of the administration of a series of tests of physical performance in children. The Fitnessgram is claimed to predict liability to certain illnesses. The claims for medical benefits are made within the printed book but the reader is referred to a separate Reference Guide (available free at a WEB site) for the statistical supporting evidence. Under "Considerations for Safety" the only example of a health problem given that might require special consideration is congenital heart disease. This could certainly be dangerous,(as evidenced by the deaths of Marissa Towler and Schermiela Palmer) but obesity and asthma are much more common. The words "Informed Consent" do not appear. For some of the tests it is suggested stopping "if the student experiences extreme discomfort or pain" but no instructions are given about how to assess pain or who is qualified to do so. The need for privacy is only mentioned in connection with skinfold measurement. Some of the tests appear to be especially difficult for victims of obesity and attempting them in public might have a negative psychological effect.
