EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description Dr. Duane Graveline, former astronaut, aerospace medical research scientist, flight surgeon, and family doctor, given Lipitor(r) to lower his cholesterol, loses his short-term memory for several hours. He discontinues the drug, but a year later at his annual NASA physical is urged to resume it at half the dose. Six weeks later he loses both short and retrograde memories for half a day and is diagnosed in the ER with transient global amnesia (TGA). Appalled by the medical community's ignorance of the cognitive side effects of the statin drugs, he begins searching for answers to his traumatic experience. Lipitor(r), Thief of Memory, Statin Drugs and the Misguided War On Cholesterol is the "scary, appealingly written" account of his findings. |

| Amazing what your Dr. will Perscbribe by Michawn Hartwell (Gig Harbor, WA) 5 Stars January 24, 2009 This book totally enlightened me to what I had been given by my Dr. and had been taking for over 4 months when I started noticing side effects that were described in the book my Dr. told me that it was all in my head. I then went to see a 2nd Dr. who immediatly took me off of the statins and I still to this day 6 months later have issues that are described in this fabulous book of knowledge. The writing is a bit on the high end of medical terminology but I think it needs to be for us to understand what the cause and effect is of taking such a medication. When there was something I didnt understand I just looked it up on the internet, but that was only a couple of words that I wanted to be 100% clear on. I would reccomend this to book to anyone who has been taking or is considering taking Statin drugs. The messages and warrings in this book are only the beginning of the dangers that lie beneath them. You also must make sure your Dr. knows your full medical history and dont be afraid to question your Dr. remember they work for you, you have employed them. I have a liver and kidney issue and no gallbladder and my Dr. put me on these, and both of those are No No's and he knows my medical history, do you think he works for me anymore???
| | life-saving book by D&D 5 Stars October 07, 2008 After taking statins for several years, my mother-in-law suddenly became very forgetful - repeating the same question four times in less than 15 minutes, forgetting that she had gone shopping or to the doctor that morning, etc. It was quite frightening for all of us.
The battle to persuade my parents-in-law that she needed to stop taking the statins went on for months until, with the help of this book and "The Great Cholesterol Con" by Dr Malcolm Kendrick (don't get the other book by the same name: it's good but boring), they finally agreed that she should stop - just for a few days, mind you - this so-called "medication" (it's clearly just a poison by another name). Within 10 days of coming off simvastatin (aka Zocor), she was noticeably better, but we're still not sure she will recover completely.
I believe these two books helped to save her life - and certainly the quality of her life.
P.S. I have now mentioned the memory loss aspect to several people I have come across who are taking statins and every one of them has suddenly realized they have been suffering recent memory losses too!
P.P.S. This book has been republished in 2008 with a new name: Statin Drugs Side Effects.
| | Some vital information about statins by Richard A. King (Klamath Falls, OR United States) 4 Stars September 30, 2008 For the millions taking statins such as Lipitor, this may be vital information. Unfortunately, there are few scientific studies to document the memory effects of Lipitor, as the drug company is not anxious to have this information become known.
| | A real eye-opener by Tom Losnedahl (Tranby, Norway) 4 Stars September 01, 2008 This is a must read for anybode on statin (anti-cholesterol) drugs such as Lipitor, Crestor or Pravachol.
Dr. Graveline discusses the really nasty side effects of statin drugs - such as acute memory loss, general reduction in learning ability, serious digestive problems etc. By giving examples from his own experiences of side effects and those of others he puts his finger at the heart of the problem - the side effects can be really bad and the "cure" is a reduction of a really important biological substance (cholesterol) that may not be harmful at all.
As a result of this book, discussing many quality-of-life reducing side effects that I also have experienced, and of further research into the area I have totally abandoned Lipitor and other statin drugs.
| | A must read before starting statins by Jeannine Otchis (Kihei Maui, Hawaii) 5 Stars September 11, 2007 Having witnessed side effects from long term use in a loved one and my own short-lived experience of Lipitor, this book is a must read. The author has legitimate credentials from the medical community and NASA. His story and the cases he reports of transient global amnesia are beyond frightening. This information more than supported the reasons I discontinued Lipitor after a few days. Don't be a human guinea pig for pharmaceuticals.

| Hidden Truth about Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs by Shane Ellison (Author)
As a drug chemist for a leading pharmaceutical company I made a startling discovery: you do not have to be dependent on FDA approved drugs to avoid heart disease. In fact, research clearly shows the opposite. You don't need a single prescription drug to avoid this killer. Consider this: FDA approved drugs, used as prescribed, are killing over 125,000 people every year. Nationally, this makes prescription drugs the fourth leading cause of death after cancer, heart disease and stroke. ...

The purpose in the choice of the title The Statin Damage Crisis is to draw attention to the thousands of statin damaged people who have written to Dr Graveline about their disabling neuropathies, myopathies and a variety of neurodegenerative conditions such as ALS and Parkinsonism associated with statin use. Although much of the book's content will be familiar to readers of Statin Drugs Side Effects, ( this was originally planned as a new edition ) the Statin Damage Crisis adds much new...
