Product Description
Beginning in 1866 and continuing for over a century, more than eight thousand people suspected of having leprosy were forcibly exiled to the Hawaiian island of Molokai -- the longest and deadliest instance of medical segregation in American history. Torn from their homes and families, these men, women, and children were loaded into shipboard cattle stalls and abandoned in a lawless place where brutality held sway. Many did not have leprosy, and many who did were not contagious, yet all were ensnared in a shared nightmare. Here, for the first time, John Tayman reveals the complete history of the Molokai settlement and its unforgettable inhabitants. It's an epic of ruthless manhunts, thrilling escapes, bizarre medical experiments, and tragic, irreversible error. Carefully researched and masterfully told, The Colony is a searing tale of individual bravery and extraordinary survival, and stands as a testament to the power of faith, compassion, and the human spirit.

Unfortunately, the first time I ordered this item, it did not arrive. I contacted the seller (they said it was sent out but....). They sent out another copy right away and I received it in great condition within days. Problem solved.

The Colony: The Harrowing True Story of the Exiles of Molokai by Lynn M. Jeppi 4 Stars

The word "harrowing" in the title only begins to cover what the exiles encountered. The account is well-written and seems very well documented, even to the chilling photo of poor Father Damien on his deathbed...two days before his death. As a child I was aware of the struggles of the lepers of Molokai, and Fr. Damien, because of my Mother's interest and her subscription to the Maryknoll Mission magazine, which, I think now, looking back, must have published many articles regarding this subject matter. I have always wanted to learn as much as possible about the leper colony at Molokai, and now am doing so.

An inspiring Place by Patricia A. Cannan (Saint Petersburg, PA USA) 5 Stars

A friend visited Molokai and was inspired by the history of Molokai and in particular Fr. Damien. This is a good book which covered the events that transpired on Molokai. I would highly recommend this book.

Look at a Unique Place, Was it a Prison or a Paradise by Grey Wolffe (North Waltham, MA United States) 4 Stars

Between 1866 and 1968, if you developed leprosy on one of the Hawaiian Islands, you could be exiled to a peninsula on the north shore of Molokai. What makes the story so human is that it was filled with devils and angels who through no fault of their own were sent to this Colony. Why was it allowed? The Bible told that the Leper should be segregated from the population to protect them from the 'unclean'. Leprosy is very seldom contagious, and even then only 5% of the general population is susceptible to the disease. It seems that Hawaiians have a higher incidence. What makes it so fearful, is that in one of it's stages, the body (especially the hands and face) swell and twist, creating a creature that doesn't appear human. Combine that with what we know about superstition and the fear is greater than the disease. In the early days of the Colony, the patients were treated like the pariahs that they were, and the living conditions were atrocious. Once it was treated like a 'real' colony (with electricity and cars) things got much better. Though a gilded cage is still a cage. Except in a few cases, not one sent to the Colony was able to lead a 'useful' life and most just existed till they died. This is one of those horrible stories, like the sterilizing of the "mentally deficient" or the "bedlam type psychiatric hospitals" that someone decided would be "the best for society as a whole". Like the terrorist who calls on everyone to sacrifice for the cause (but they never do), 'the powers that be' never have to deal with the day-to-day operational hells they create. Zeb Kantrowitz

Certainly this book is no secret. I enjoyed it. The writing is leaps and bounds above similar journalist-penned popular history. Tayman is an above-average writer.

To deal with the leprosy problem in the Hawaiian Islands in 1872, sufferers were relentlessly exiled to Molokai, a barren isle off the coast. There they lived in miserable surroundings, abandoned by the outside world. To alleviate their fate, Father Damien was the first priest to go to Molokai. His bishop's last words were that "he must not touch anyone."

Little by little, Damien earned the trust of the lepers, and eventually, his appeals for nuns and supplies resonated throughout the...

Damien the Leper
by John Farrow (Author)

The great adventure of Damien the Leper began quietly over a century ago. Since then, his remarkable story has become legend throughout the world.

Joseph De Veuster left his secure life in Belgium, thrusting aside all thoughts of personal danger and spending the rest of his days as Father Damien comforting the sick and the dying. Though virtually entombed among the living dead of a leper colony on the island of Molokai, Father Damien managed to find beauty and enchantment in the lush...
