EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description With the FDA's warning that antidepressants may cause agitation, anxiety, hostility, and even violent or suicidal tendencies, these medications are at the forefront of national legal news. Harvard physician Joseph Glenmullen has led the charge to warn the public that antidepressants are overprescribed, underregulated, and, especially, misunderstood in their side and withdrawal effects. Now he offers a solution!More than twenty million Americans -- including over one million teens and children -- take one of today's popular antidepressants, such as Paxil, Zoloft, or Effexor. Dr. Glenmullen recognizes the many benefits of antidepressants and prescribes them to his patients, but he is also committed to warning the public of the dangers associated with overprescription. Dr. Glenmullen's last book, Prozac Backlash, sounded the alarm about possible dangers. The Antidepressant Solution provides the remedy. It is the first book to call attention to the drugs' catch-22: Although many people are ready to go off these drugs, they continue to take them because either the patient or the doctor mistakes antidepressant withdrawal for depressive relapse. The Antidepressant Solution offers an easy, step-by-step guide for patients and their doctors.Written by the premier authority in the field, The Antidepressant Solution is an invaluable book for all those concerned with going through the process -- from friends and family members to doctors and patients themselves. |

| Great help by L. Muir (Torrance, CA United States) 5 Stars October 08, 2009 This is a GREAT book if you're trying to get off anti-depressant's. It walked me through each step and gave me the encouragement I needed to get through the rough spots. I'm going to give it to my doctor so she will have it as a reference for other people going through the same thing.
| | A welcomed necessity for anyone trying to wean from antidepressants by J. Finney (Texas) 5 Stars July 13, 2009 I was placed on Paxil in 1996 and after a year, decided I was ready to come off. Unfortunately, I experienced withdrawal symptoms that resulted in countless failed attempts. When asking my doctors over the years for help, they offered no real solution for me. After reading this book, using the tapering schedule listed and the checklist he offers, I was finally able to wean myself off the unnecessary medication, without the roller-coaster ride of withdrawals. Now after 13 years and thousands of dollars spent being tethered to these drugs, I'm finally FREE!
If you've experienced doctors telling you you'll have to stay on these drugs forever, or telling you to taper by taking the meds every other day and such, then this book is for you. Dr. Gelnmullen does an incredible job speaking to "everyman" and it's a fairly easy read. I read this book in a single day and started my taper the next day. I am so glad I did. If you want to regain control of your life, then buy this book. You won't regret it!
| | very useful, not the most exciting read by Paulina 5 Stars June 04, 2009 This book does what it sets out to do - it guides you through quitting antidepressants. It is not a book about fighting anxiety, depression or panic. Rather it is a how-to book for when you are ready to quit (you are cured, have sever side effects etc) and want to avoid the withdrawal pains. First it introduces the reader to the "withdrawal syndrome", something that is still unknown to many physician (mine included, as I found out) and tells you what to expect. Then it explains how to best taper the meds and follows several hypothetical people through the process, each with their own set and different severity of symptoms. It is not a very exciting book, and it sure is repetitive, but like I said, I found it amazingly useful when tapering of my SSRIs.
| | Why is he the only doc to understand and admit the probs with withdrawing from psych meds? by Stephanie (Dublin, OH) 5 Stars May 11, 2009 i am pretty furious and disappointed in the medical community anymore anyway - i think they accept drug company's "studies" without question and now here we are with hormone, vaccine, obesity, cancer and psych problems galore - duh!
anyway - this book saved my life - i think antidepressants also saved my life - 15 YEARS AGO!!!! they are important and lifesaving - to a point - however a year after that severe depressive episode in 1995, i should have been weaned off - i believe now that all mental health problems i experienced - including one stay in the hospital in the 14 years since then - were CAUSED by different psych meds and/or attempting to withdraw from them. It has now been 6 months since i weaned off of them - with daily light therapy in front of a SAD lightbox and 40 min of moderate exercise - I am doing far better than i have in 14 years. And I'm finally able to loose weight 30 down, 20 to go. Thank you Dr. Glenmullen -please keep spreading the word - I'm sure it is not easy.
| | Great guide for getting off meds. Psychiatrists/prescribing doctors should be forced to read this before prescribing SSRI's. by J. Spalding (United states) 5 Stars April 11, 2009 I recently determined that my SSRI was not benefiting me, and this book provided the much needed insights into how to break the addiction. The book is obviously biased against SSRI's and for good reason--they are overprescribed and cause unnecessary harm. Before you go on meds, read this as a warning...I personally did benefit in some ways from SSRI but wish I could have avoided it...impossible with current medical system. SSRI's do help you break old habits, but so does a long vacation and/or any other mood-altering substance.
