CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 5.0 based on 9 reviews)
| wonderful book by God Of War (New York, NY) 5 Stars November 12, 2009 I am an amateur star gazer so I bought this book along with "nightwatch: a practical guide to viewing the universe". It became such a wonderful complementary book for me. I have a lot of fun reading it and looking at those beautiful pictures. I am glad I bought it and I highly recommend it to others who are beginners like me.
| | Beautiful Reference Book for Any Astronomy Buff by silhouette_of_enchantment (USA) 5 Stars July 31, 2009 I bought this a few weeks ago, based on the reviews of others on this site, and I wasn't disappointed. I bought the paperback version of Universe. There are color photographs from satellite flybys and Hubble Telescope snapshots of planets and star systems. My favorites, thus far, are the in-depth description of planetary satellites, the Kuiper Belt, the Oort Cloud and other features of the Milky Way. (My planetary favorites are Neptune, Venus, Mars and Jupiter's Galilean satellite system. The It also includes detailed constellation charts for stargazer buffs. Highly recommended.
| | Space Made Understandable. by W. Meaney 5 Stars March 28, 2009 This book is heavy, large and quite colorful. It is in fact dazzling. It has a lot of up to date information and explanations. It is filled with science from sub-proton forms of matter to matter distribution in the farthest extent of the visible universe. It even gives sky charts so you can learn constellations. In short it is a comprehensive overview of what we know of the universe, illustrated in order to preserve perspective.
| | Spectacular Photos by Andrew L. Hill (USA) 5 Stars March 16, 2009 This book is an excellent buy for just the photos. The book is cover to cover with almost every page filled with sharp pictures of moons, planets, stars, nebulae, galaxies, star clusters, scientist, graphic illustrations, space capsules, and scientific instrumentation. I have spent several nights too tired for serious reading just gazing at the photos.
Oh, and the book has words too. I had Introductory Astronomy in college and this book is on an equivalent level without the math. Universe gives a brief history of Astronomy and Spaceflight and provides an extensive survey of major topics of Astronomy as the science stands today. But, it does not cover Cosmology or any of the technical aspects of Astrophysics. The last section has an Atlas for finding and identifying constellations that would be useful to the beginner.
I recommend Universe for all ages and it would make a great gift for school age children. I keep my copy out as a coffee table book as several guests have enjoyed as well.
Five Stars
| | Wow, just wow by Cheri 5 Stars March 06, 2009 Around 400 pages of eye popping photos of every aspect of outer space, with crisply written data-densely-packed comments...in short blurbs that are easy to read just a few at a time.
I gave this to an 8 year old with a special interest in space, to look at the photos. She's pleased. She especially wants to know what's out there after the end of the universe & page 22 gives a short clearly written explanation of what we know on this topic (such as what limits how far we can "view".)
Because I gave it away shortly after it arrived, I have to wait to visit until I can read more myself...and I can't wait! Science books can seem dry, but because it's a collection of fascinating photos & the data is in short paragraphs caption-like for each photo, it draws you into wanting to read each one.
Many of the photos are smaller, a few inches, but others are larger & ALL are in bright colors. It's page after page like this. There aren't many (if any) pages of just text.
Even the last 100 pages of constellations which shows you how to find them in the sky, highlights the designs of each one & I can see this girl thumbing through just to see the "rabbit" & "dog"... Somehow even these pages on the same topic aren't boring at all either & encourage a sense of knowing what the sky looks like out there.
Truly a fundamental job. I'd considered a the DK kids book on space, which I haven't seen. However, this is accessable even to a child (she can read "the sun", "jupiter"...) & if in high school, it's definitely readable.
==========
Feedback is that she LOVED it & spent days with it. Then she insisted mommy read it from the very beginning like a novel & got overwhelmed. She'll come around...since she was in love with all the info & photos.
