a valuable resource by John Fisher 5 Stars
April 07, 2009
I am a Systems/Software Engineer, who helps customers solve complex storage issues. Part of that role includes training the various individuals who support those customers as well as those customers. As another reviewer noted, all too often the "solution" is to just replace hardware. All too often, that does not address underlying issues. As a result, I now take time during EVERY presentation to present the theories behind performance management. The importance of a book such as this is that it helps all of us better comprehend the WHY performance problems arise. Understanding the WHY allows us to identify the WHERE, which allows us to better design methods to avoid common pitfalls. Few among us will be able to design a storage subsystem using modelling software. Still, it presents the use of such tools and the concept of designing a storage environment to avoid workload induced problems. This book will be a valuable resource for myself and those to whom I present such material. This should be a valuable resource for anyone who deals with storage performance analysis.

If you work with network storage, thi is a must by imre veres (zagreb, Croatia, Europe) 5 Stars

Excellent book on storage performance analisys. Most of the guys responsible for storage should read it, but unfortunately did not : (. You can look at the "search inside" so I shall not write about content. I am IT pro for about 30 years now, but never met a system engineer with detailed knowledge explained in the book(it is easier to buy a new storage). So I strongly recomend this book also to managers of IT departments. After reading the book and asking their team some questions, you will know if someone is doing the work or not.Or buy a new storage for another milion$. It is unbelievable how many IT staff read the whitepapers(included marketing) and could not make a solution with his own knowledge. They should read books like this one.

Thorough, well written by Publius 5 Stars

Simitci's treatment of storage performance is unusually comprehensive and rigorous. While sometimes bordering on the academic - some of the methods proposed require time and skill availble to the researcher but not the typical storage administator - on the whole the book should prove useful to those planning and designing prodcution, enterprise storage systems. The references are well done. This is an excellent book.

Finally, a book that encompasses all of the aspects of performance analysis and SAN! I found this book to be referencing many of the books I and colleagues have found to be excellent examples on how to conduct performance analysis. Easy to understand and well explained theories make this an excellent tool for the seasoned performance analyst and the expert storage analyst.
