Product Description
On occasion nearly everyone experiences short-term back pain from sore or strained muscles. But for many who come to treat their back gingerly because they fear further "injury," a cycle of worry and inactivity results; this aggravates existing muscle tightness and leads them to think of themselves as having a "bad back." Even worse is the understandable but usually counterproductive assumption that back pain is caused by "abnormalities"–bulging disks, a damaged spine, and so on. However, these abnormalities are frequently found in those who have absolutely no pain whatsoever. In reality, most backs are strong and resilient, built to support our bodies for a lifetime; truly "bad backs" are rare.Drawing on their work with patients and studies from major scientific journals and corporations, the authors of Back Sense–all three are former chronic back pain sufferers themselves–developed a revolutionary self-treatment approach targeting the true causes of chronic back pain. It is based on conclusive evidence proving that stress and inactivity are usually the prime offenders, and it allows patients to avoid the restrictions and expense of most other treatments. After showing readers how to rule out the possibility that a rare medical condition is the source of their problem, Back Sense clearly and convincingly explains the actual factors behind chronic back pain and systematically leads readers toward recapturing a life free of back pain.

Amazon.com Review
About 50 million Americans suffer back pain every year, and chronic back pain disables 1 in 40 adults. Back Sense takes a different approach, contending that most chronic back pain is caused not by a damaged spine, but by stress, muscle tension, and inactivity. The aim is to help you reclaim your life and decrease your pain. The spine might be damaged initially, but it usually heals on its own, the authors assert. After that, stress causes muscle tightness, which results in continued pain. Traditional treatments don't work because they treat the spine, not the stress. The solution: understand your own symptoms and pain, learn to resume full activity, and work with your negative emotions to prevent them from derailing your recuperation. Part 1 of Back Sense helps you evaluate your own case and determine whether you have warning signs of a serious injury or disease (in which case you must get medical attention), understand the mind-body connection, and examine how stress may be causing your chronic pain. Part 2 teaches you how to bring full physical activity back into your life and manage your negative emotions. The authors--two of whom relieved chronic back pain with this very program--do not want you to baby your body or limit your life to protect your back. Rather, they contend that "being careful actually appears to be harmful." They explain that "as long as you are trying to get rid of pain, you stay preoccupied with it," creating more tension, and by avoiding "risky" movements, you lose muscle conditioning, making you vulnerable to additional injury. The book takes you through a process of gradually incorporating more exercise and tracking your reactions. The style is simple and friendly, and the book has many plan charts, logs, and other helpful tools. --Joan Price

I give this to friends with back pain by WaterSheep 5 Stars

I have scoliosis - not severe enough for surgery, but bad enough to cause me pain. No book, doctor or chiropractor has helped me nearly as much as this book. Highly recommended.

Worked! by Mariana Gomes Fernandes (Brazil) 5 Stars

I gave it to my father, who had a lumbar pain that was not proportional to the injury in the spinal discs he had. Even the neurologist said he didn't have anything, just a small protusion, but the pain persisted. So he read the book and, coincidence or not, in the middle of it, the pain dissapered! He liked very much the aproach, and is still enjoyng it!

Changed my life! by Dr. Bonnie Zucker (Washington, DC USA) 5 Stars

After going to a conference on Psychotherapy and Mindfulness given by Dr. Ron Siegel, I was inspired to get his book. Having developed back problems (muscle spasms/ "my back went out") a year and a half ago, I was very interested in learning about his approach. While regular yoga has been extraordinarily helpful, I still considered my back vulnerable. This book has challenged this mentality. Since reading this book, I have successfully resumed activities that have I been avoiding since developing back pain. I am more aware of how worrying about hurting my back has made me afraid to use my back in certain ways, and am no longer giving into this worry. This book has changed my mindset regarding back pain and my body. This approach is empowering and I strongly recommend that anyone with a history of back muscle spasms read this book and adopt this method.

made light out of some people's genuine pain by Squirrel Girl (US of A) 2 Stars

Although I agree with the premise that stress can and does cause physical pain and many chronic ailments, there are many of us out there with serious debilitating back problems, that can not be just "willed away" or minimized by meditation and breathing exercises. A small chapter at the end of the book owned up to some of the serious back problems that are, in fact, serious and would need special treatment sometimes (rarely) even surgery. I have a feeling this was inserted as almost an afterthought to prevent any lawsuits from anyone believing you can ignore your serious back problems and get right back to your previous normal life. Unfortunately that's not the case for many people out there who aren't just suffering from muscle spasms and stress.

Last book you need to read to overcome chronic back pain. by Reece Hasson 5 Stars

After suffering for more than an year with chronic back pain and being advised by a neurologist that I had an enlarged spinal disk pressing on my sciatic nerve I ended up in an emergency room a year later where the doctor prescribed a muscle relaxant and advised me to buy books in the book store on back pain. I still have a sore back on rainy days but I can now lift up to forty pounds and suffer from no sciatic pain at all. I rave about this book to anyone who will listen.
