EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description Are you plagued by fears, phobias, or panic attacks? Do you toss and turn at night with a knot in your stomach, worrying about your job, your family, work, your health, or relationships? Do you suffer from crippling shyness, obsessive doubts, or feelings of insecurity? What you may not realize is that these fears are almost never based on reality. Anxiety is one of the world’s oldest cons. When you’re anxious, you’re actually fooling yourself. You are telling yourself things that simply aren’t true. See if you can recognize yourself in any of these distortions:All-or-Nothing Thinking: “My mind will go blank when I give my presentation at work, and everyone will think I’m an idiot.”Fortune Telling: “I just know I’ll freeze up and blow it when I take my test.”Mind Reading: “Everyone at this party can see how nervous I am.”Magnification: “Flying is so dangerous. I think this plane is going to crash!”Should Statements: “I shouldn’t be so anxious and insecure. Other people don’t feel this way.”Emotional Reasoning: “I feel like I’m on the verge of cracking up!”Self-Blame: “What’s wrong with me? I’m such a loser!”Mental Filter: “Why can’t I get anything done? My life seems like one long procrastination.”Now imagine what it be like to live a life that’s free of worries and self-doubt; to go to sleep at night feeling peaceful and relaxed; to overcome your shyness and have fun with other people; to give dynamic presentations without worrying yourself sick ahead of time; to enjoy greater creativity, productivity and self-confidence.Does that sound impossible? The truth is you can defeat your fears. In When Panic Attacks, Dr. Burns takes you by the hand and shows you how to overcome every conceivable kind of anxiety. In fact, you will learn how to use more than forty simple, effective techniques, and the moment you put the lie to the distorted thoughts that plague you, your fears will immediately disappear. Dr. Burns also shares the latest research on the drugs commonly prescribed for anxiety and depression and explains why they may sometimes do more harm than good. This is not pop psychology but proven, fast-acting techniques that have been shown to be more effective than medications. When Panic Attacks is an indispensable handbook for anyone who’s worried sick and sick of worrying. |
CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 5.0 based on 18 reviews)
| Excellent book! by David P. Carrillo (Ontario, CA USA) 5 Stars July 31, 2009 As someone who has struggled with anxiety for many years, I cannot reccommend this book enough. I'm in my early 20s and have already been on and off medication/therapy for years. When I started to feel like I was losing control I decided to take matters into my own hands and this book has helped me tremendously.
One thing of note: do not get this book unless you are serious about getting to the root of your problems and willing to work to feel better. It requires you to examine your thoughts and feelings and complete exercises that will help you think and feel better.
It is great for those looking for real change. For people looking for some magical cure without putting in any effort: look elsewhere.
| | Only for Run-of-the-Mill anxiety sufferers by Daniel J. Fowler (Kansas City, MO USA) 3 Stars July 16, 2009 This book really is great, but it presented a problem for me that I could see as an issue for others. It seems to be targeted strictly at your "run of the mill", generic-type anxiety sufferers - not people like I who have panic over deep philosophical questions that are next to impossible to quell. When you are having existential crises day-by-day, it's next to impossible for a book like this to provide any information that can help you get through those - you truly just have to seek answers with all your heart I have found.
However, for someone who has anxiety about the mundane such as leaving home or anything of that concrete, physical nature, this book would probably be really great for them. It did help me with dealing with some of the symptoms that would bother me by realizing that they are just that - symptoms of a disorder that will never kill you and can go away at anytime without drug therapy of any sort.
| | "don't believe everything you think" by Kathryn Shimmura 5 Stars May 27, 2009 I've been a fan of Dr. Burns for a long time because he explains cognitive behavioral therapy/theory (CBT) so well and has plenty of techniques for using it. The main idea is that the way we think strongly influences how we feel and sometimes, how we act. When we can change our distorted ways of thinking, the door opens to greater happiness and satisfaction. Of course, when the door opens, you have to go through it, that is, you have to practice the techniques to gain the benefits.
Although I like his Feeling Good books, I like "When Panic Attacks" more because the writing is better. It flows more and is funny in places. It has much of the same material as in his earlier books, so you can benefit either way. This one is just easier to read.
Although CBT has helped me with depression and anxiety, it helped me A LOT with anger. Once I really accepted that no one died and made me queen, and that I didn't need to waste energy on trivial annoyances, I became calmer and easier to get along with and that has been a huge thing for me.
| | Good by Joy A. Kalbfleisch 4 Stars March 26, 2009 There is alot of helpful information in this book but also alot of written workbook type things to do. But if it helps then I guess it's worth the effort. When you have panic attacks anythings worth a shot!!
| | Truly a remarkable book and very helpful by Adam Brenner (NJ USA) 5 Stars March 02, 2009 I have had some experiences with anxiety and panic attacks, although not as severe as some, I was looking for some answers and found this book to be quite
helpful. I did some of the exercises and mood charts and found them to really work.
It was also interesting and helpful to know that there are many successful people also suffering from panic attacks. It is definitely a great resource for anyone who
is dealing with panic attacks.
I have read some other books on the subject of panic and anxiety attacks and none
of them really seemed to be that powerful for me. Although you really have to do the exercises in order to get results and to feel better, you can achieve some much needed relief from anxiety symptoms. He talks about the tools you need in order to really overcome fears such as being in an elevator, or social anxiety and so on.
I would highly recommend Dr. Burns book and I think it may really help a lot of people and change some lives with the information he gives to the reader. It is not
a very easy read and some may find it to be a little difficult and requires the reader to really be involved and to really process the information. Some of the exercises may be a little tedious but they do work and there are no real short cuts or easy answers to dealing with anxiety and panic attacks.
