EDITORIAL REVIEWS

Product Description
The thoroughly revised and updated Third Edition of the acclaimed Modern Epidemiology reflects both the conceptual development of this evolving science and the increasingly focal role that epidemiology plays in dealing with public health and medical problems. Coauthored by three leading epidemiologists, with sixteen additional contributors, this Third Edition is the most comprehensive and cohesive text on the principles and methods of epidemiologic research. The book covers a broad range of concepts and methods, such as basic measures of disease frequency and associations, study design, field methods, threats to validity, and assessing precision. It also covers advanced topics in data analysis such as Bayesian analysis, bias analysis, and hierarchical regression. Chapters examine specific areas of research such as disease surveillance, ecologic studies, social epidemiology, infectious disease epidemiology, genetic and molecular epidemiology, nutritional epidemiology, environmental epidemiology, reproductive epidemiology, and clinical epidemiology. "Doody's Core Titles™ 2009."

This book is a fantastic review of epidemiology and epidemiologic concepts with a modern perspective. As a doctoral student in epidemiology, I've found this contains an appropriate discussion of issues and ideas essential to the field. Highly recommended!!!

to save the cost, the publisher even omit the first 23 pages! the shipment I got starts with Page 24.

Disappointed with paper/printing quality by E. Grant 4 Stars
March 06, 2009
I borrowed the 2nd edition from a colleague and was so impressed with the book that I ordered it immediately. This book has no equal in terms of content (the word 'encyclopedia' is aptly used in a previous review). The statistical explanations are what really set this book apart from other epidemiological textbooks. The price was surprisingly low compared to other textbooks on the market. Unfortunately, after receiving the book, I see how they managed to keep the price down. The type is small, the margins are small and the paper is thin. Also, to me (highly subjective), the paper has an unpleasant desiccating feel. Finally, I like to mark up my books with highlighting and notes in the margins -- but this just makes a mess out of this book. Highlighting bleeds through and pencil notations are visible from the opposite side of the page. The 2nd edition was more robust. Publishers can't win. Most books are too expensive. This (outstanding) book comes in at a great price -- but the compromises are painfully evident.

*The* Epidemiology Textbook by E. Lofgren 5 Stars

Modern Epidemiology, 3rd Edition is in all honesty the gold standard for higher level Epidemiology textbooks. The latest edition, with its thinner paper, packs more into a considerably more portable format. Highly recommended for any student or practicing professional interested in Epi methods.

Epidemiology: An Introduction

Epidemiology: An Introduction
by Kenneth J. Rothman (Author)

In the past thirty years epidemiology has matured from a fledgling scientific field into a vibrant discipline that brings together the biological and social sciences, and in doing so draws upon disciplines ranging from statistics and survey sampling to the philosophy of science. These areas of knowledge have converged into a modern theory of epidemiology that has been slow to penetrate into textbooks, particularly at the introductory level. Epidemiology: An Introduction closes the gap. It...

Statistics for Epidemiology

Statistics for Epidemiology
by Nicholas P. Jewell (Author)

Statistical ideas have been integral to the development of epidemiology and continue to provide the tools needed to interpret epidemiological studies. Although epidemiologists do not need a highly mathematical background in statistical theory to conduct and interpret such studies, they do need more than an encyclopedia of "recipes."Statistics for Epidemiology achieves just the right balance between the two approaches, building an intuitive understanding of the methods most important to...
