| Outstanding resource by Rebecca Novak (Portland, Oregon) 5 Stars October 21, 2009 As grant makers continue to emphasize collaborative relationships I find more and more of my time is spent trying to get diverse organizations to come together on a plan. This book is the perfect resource for helping with the "other duties as assigned." Rebecca Novak, Grant Consultant, Portland, Oregon
| | Facilitator's Guide to Participatory Decision-Making by Dog-eared reader (Denver, CO) 5 Stars July 05, 2009 I ordered this book a couple days before I was assigned to lead a meeting with complex goals and dynamics. The goal of that meeting was to reach an agreement on a difficult topic and to build team decision making. The book was a goldmine. I devoured it, picking the tools and methods that seemed to suit the group need. Sam Kaner's approach is non-threatening and affirmative. He instills confidence. The books is designed with lots of checklists and diagrams that you can photocopy, which I did. I give Sam Kaner and his guide a big thumbs-up.
| | A Facilitator's Tool Kit by Robert E. Levasseur (St. Augustine, Florida, USA) 5 Stars May 02, 2009 This is a very pragmatic collection of tools that can benefit anyone who wants to facilitate a group in arriving at a collective decision.
Much like a cookbook, this book presents simple, easy to apply tools that anyone can learn to use effectively.
As someone who has facilitated meetings for a living, I can highly recommend this book as a do-it-yourself manual.

| | Very user friendly by KLG (Utah) 4 Stars January 12, 2009 This book is very very easy to use, and delivers the content in a way that is both easy to grasp and to remember.
The most important part is that, while other books on this topic take you through an ideal process while only hinting at the roadblocks, THIS book tells you what problems are likely to come up, and gives ideas to address them.
Yes, the pages look VERY simplistic, and the large font reminds me of a children's text book, but it really sticks; made me laugh a few times too! (Actually, now that I think about it, it's more like a PowerPoint presentation style.)
Anyway, as a city planner who deals with the public a lot, I enjoyed it and found it useful enough that it will remain in my office library.
| | Great decision-making facilitation! by Tara Martin-Milius (Silicon Valley, CA USA) 5 Stars August 10, 2008 The 1st edition of Sam Kaner's book was a fairly thin volume that diagramed his divergent-convergent thinking model. It made me laugh when he named the struggle to reach convergence the `groan zone'! Most who have facilitated decision-making have experienced this, the name works well for the process! This 2nd edition is about his model with much more added around essential facilitation skills.
Some of the things that worked particularly well for me are:
* The `right brained' approach of the book, lots of illustrations
* The visuals model the visual organizers facilitators use
* The facilitator fundamentals section gets to the basics
* The segment on difficult dynamics and facilitation problems
* The `pathetic agenda' checklist
This is a wonderful reference book with humor and heart. It is a practical handbook that every facilitator should have.
