EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description Bipolar disorder can be devastating. It can disrupt relationships and careers, it can wreak havoc on family life, and, when not properly treated, it can be fatal. Since 1999 this compassionate and comprehensive guide has helped tens of thousands of people cope with this complex disease. This, the second edition of Bipolar Disorder, is thoroughly updated and discusses promising new options for diagnosis and treatment along with new information on the disease's genetic components.Bipolar disorder is difficult to diagnose. Dr. Mondimore explains how symptoms fluctuate in persons with seasonal affective disorder, how they can lead to a mistaken diagnosis of attention deficit--hyperactivity disorder in children, and how they may be made worse by alcohol or drug addiction. The disease can also be difficult to treat. Dr. Mondimore gives advice about how to pick a psychiatrist and cope with the stigma of psychiatric diagnosis. He provides extensive information on treatment options, including the advantages, disadvantages, and side effects of various drug therapies. He also describes what it is like to live with bipolar disorder and discusses how lifestyle changes can improve quality of life. Throughout, he focuses on the importance of building a support system, planning for emergencies, and giving yourself permission to seek help. |

| The worst customer service I ever received! by D. Abate 1 Stars September 16, 2009 My daughter is Autistic and since mental disorders are among the factors behing Autism my husband and I always look for material to better educate ourselves. I found another book that was not available and did not or did not remember ordering this book. When I needed to return the product I received very rude and insulting feedback from generationrecycle. I will not be ordering anything from generationrecycle in the future.
| | Highly recommeded by Susan M. Kane (Massachusetts) 5 Stars June 16, 2009 This is the second time I've bought this book. After showing it to a friend, she wouldn't give it back! This is the perfect book for those who have bipolar disorder or who have a family member or friend with bipolar. It is very user friendly and it answered all my questions. I highly recommend it.
| | Professionally written for the layman by A. White (Arkansas, USA) 4 Stars May 22, 2009 I have many years experience as a professional working with people with this disorder and it opened my eyes and gave me a better understanding and better compassion for those who are beginning their struggles to find balance in their lives with this sneaky disorder. This book was a thorough and well-written book. It has a therapeutic feel to it as if it is part of a therapy regimen. At times it gets too impersonal and a bit too clinical but the author tries to keep it understandable and effective for the everyday reader. I read this at the same time as "Loving Someone with Bipolar Disorder" and had to force myself back to this book time and time again because of it's more clinical feel whereas the other one gave insight into bipolar because one of the authors lives with this disorder. The books complimented one another because each gave a different but needed perspective to the overall disorder, personal accounts, and insight into treatments and obstacles. I would recommend it specifically because it is informative and professional.
| | A welcome resource for me, having had bipolar disorder for over three decades by James L. Charles (Seattle, WA USA) 4 Stars March 30, 2009 Bipolar Illness is examined, defined and separated into several categories by Dr. Mondimore. The information is delivered to the reader as from one who has spent much time and effort deciphering the illness and its effects, while at the same time being deeply involved in the hands on combat of treating, evaluating and documenting patients for valuable studies.
This guide for patients and families sheds a light on the murky misunderstandings about Bipolar Illness that can cripple or hinder sufferers like myself, let alone our families. The author tells grim truths and doesn't pull punches when he reveals the powerful and destructive mechanisms that surge within us and threaten to wrestle us down at any given moment. Denial of the severity of the illness does not exist here. The doctor instead takes on bipolar illness with the bravery and yet precision of an alligator wrestler, who has the understanding and techniques at his disposal to subdue the beast and temporarily "overpower" his subject.
Among many benefits waiting to be enjoyed by the reader are clarity and thorough examination. Tables and figures are loaded with facts, results of studies that have been performed and valuable information throughout the book. This is like another textbook for me as I recently started attending a Bipolar Group in which we look at the illness, medications to treat it and ways to cope with it.
I thank Dr. Mondimore for his diligent efforts on the behalf of many who have the illness and their families.
| | A text of transcendental importance for the next years to come! by Hiram Gomez Pardo (Valencia, Venezuela) 5 Stars January 05, 2009 This undesired and every day much more extended disordered pattern into the normally expected behavior's biorhythm, has become a warning call in many families and couples around the world.
With admirable erudition, this tireless investigator has recollected enough evidence to give us the main clues about how to face and deal with this relentless and merciless anomaly.
There should not be just a single human being who ignore this fact because its progressive exponential growing simply can not be overlooked.
