EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description Doctor Dealer is the story of Larry Lavin, a bright, charismatic young man who rose from his working-class upbringing to win a scholarship to a prestigious boarding school, earn Ivy League college and dental degrees, and buy his family a house in one of Philadelphia's most exclusive suburbs. But behind the facade of his success was a dark secret -- at every step of the way he was building the foundation for a cocaine empire that would grow to generate over $60 million in annual sales. Award-winning journalist Mark Bowden tells the saga of Lavin's rise and fall with the gripping, novelistic narrative style that won him international acclaim as the author of the New York Times best-seller Black Hawk Down. "Immensely readable . . . eye-popping . . . a smoothly crafted, exciting, can't-put-it-down book." -- Louisville New Voice |
CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.5 based on 22 reviews)
| Outstanding by P. Kimbril 5 Stars June 02, 2009 Outstanding read. While the story itself is amazing, Mark Bowden makes it even more fascinating.
| | It was good but... by good reads (Chicago) 4 Stars January 29, 2009 I enjoyed the book, however, the author had too much detail in describing places that would put you sleep or or skip the entire paragraph. In accordance Bowden also left the reader hanging at times abruptly ending sentences. With only two minor errors, all in all it is a good pick up book to read that will keep you entertained and saying to yourself "how can this guy not stop dealing and live off his already made millions"? Just like the drug itself it is an addiction of fast pace business, money, power, and illeagal activity.
| | This book is great by Devin Karcy (PA) 5 Stars January 21, 2009 I read this book twice. Once when I bought it in 2001 and again two years ago. It's interesting in that it deals with Ivy Leaguers who didn't have to sell cocaine in order to become rich but yet they chose this path and faced the ultimate consequences. Buy this book and read it once and then you'll read it a second time and find it just as interesting.
| | Yuppie dentist also dealing coke behind the scenes and making millions! by Justin W. Thole (Grand Rapids, MI) 4 Stars December 28, 2007 The book is about Larry Lavin, a dentist, family man, and cocaine dealer on the side (!). The book is well written. Moves along very nicely. This story goes to show what greed and discontentment can do to a person. Here you have a guy who has a lot going for him, but risks it all by dealing cocaine.
| | a pretty goos read, VERY deep background, great Bowden by Carson B. Wilcox 4 Stars March 10, 2007 a good book to read, could have used that 30 page block of pictures you would find in most of these books, Bowdens writing is very visual, talking alot about people's looks, and mannerisms, so some pictures would have really tied it together I though... he did it in killing pablo, and it really sank home some of his points.
