CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 5.0 based on 4 reviews)
| Trees and Forests by Richard Geer 4 Stars March 14, 2010 Very interesting book on trees accompanied by very good photography. Would recommend to anyone truly interested in trees.
| | Masterful and Important Book on the Environment by Daniel A. Cornford (Davis, CA USA) 5 Stars December 15, 2008 I have long admired Tim Palmer's exquisite environmental photography and writing. Through his nearly twenty books, he has inspired a broader understanding and appreciation of America's rivers, mountains, and diverse landscapes. By way of words and images, he succeeds as well as anyone I know in imparting genuine, heartfelt reasons to care about the fate of the world around us. And his determined and optimistic faith that we all embody the power and responsibility to make a difference is infectious.
Such are the strengths of his newest book, Trees & Forests of America. Its 200 stunningly beautiful and splendidly reproduced photographs celebrate the nation's remarkable sylvan legacy. Woodlands, Palmer reminds us, cover about half the surface of the United States, and they contribute mightily to the distinctive look, character, and beauty of regions across the country. Readers interested in photography, nature, and environmental affairs will find this a masterful work.
| | Must read! An amazing journey through America's Forests by Beth M. Young (Birmingham, AL) 5 Stars December 07, 2008 With brilliant photographs and a clear voice, Tim Palmer guides the reader through a majestic American landscape, on a journey of beauty and a story of our connectivity and interdependence on forests and their ecosystems. By looking at our forests through a visionary artist's eyes I discovered many new things about the complexity and beauty old growth trees, the threats to these systems as well as the immense problems these systems can solve for humanity. Tim's story talks about the mystery and importance of these diverse systems and the simple grace of a walk in the woods. The photographs of the soul of each spectacular forest would be reason enough to spend time wandering through this book, but the story is equally compelling .
This is a must read for water boards, zoning and planning commissions, and Sunday school classes seeking to learn more about creation; it is a book for hunters, fisherman, birders and all who enjoy, or remember the joy, peace and beauty of a forest. This book shows us how we are all interconnected to our forests. Tim also has a book on the "Rivers of America" that is equally as splendid, as is "Luminous Mountains: the Sierra Nevada".
| | Enhanced with a profusion of full color photographic images by Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) 5 Stars November 10, 2008 The forests of America are as geographically diverse as the flora and fauna they shelter. In "Trees & Forests Of America" author and photographer Tim Palmer showcases that diversity from the towering redwoods on the edge of the Pacific Ocean to the magnificent oaks seen inland along Atlantic coast. All the forest regions are magnificently represented including the Northern, Central Hardwoods and Appalachians, South, Drylands/Grasslands, Rocky Mountains, Drylands/Desert/Steppe; Sierra Nevada and Southern California; and the Northwest areas. An informed and informative text is enhanced with a profusion of full color photographic images providing illustration and example of the lives of the trees, the ecological workings of the forests, as well as the challenges confronting our woodlands and the people who are working to preserve and protect them for the sake of future generations. "Trees & Forests Of America" is a superbly produced and instructive work that should be a part of every academic and community library Environmental Studies reference collection and supplemental reading list. Also very highly recommended for those same collections is Tim Palmer's earlier work, "Rivers Of America" which is also published by Harry N. Abrams.
