Not Bad by Scythian Barbarian (Honolulu, HI) 3 Stars
December 29, 2005
This book was not a bad choice as a review for the Abdominal portion of the ARDMS. There were some problems through the book, that although not detrimental to the material, should have been resolved prior to it's publishing. There were more then a few mistakes regarding the review questions at the conclusion of each section. Further, the organization of the book was chaotic at times, reducing it's cohesiveness in certain sections. Questions would be given in the self exam portions at the chapter conclusions without discussion of the topic. One of the many examples of this would be questions about Thyroid hormones, when in fact, no review was provided regarding those topics. Many more similar issues were prevalent in this book. Finally, the preparation for the ARDMS could have been better, with questions that would have been geared more similarly to those on the actual exam. Many of the review questions were definition-of-terms related, whereas in the actual exam, the questions revolved on concepts, and especially a good understanding of B-mode, images gray-scale images. It should be rated as 3.5, not 3, but comparing this to another, better organized and cohesive book (discussed in the next paragraph), the ratings cannot in good conscience be 4. For a book, that's far better organized (and avoids the pitfalls just mentioned on the Abdominal Ultrasound Study Guide), but unfortunately on the Physics and Instrumentation section of the ARDMS, please look for "Essentials of Ultrasound Physics" by James Zagzebski.
