| Not for me. by C. Smith (Austin, TX) 2 Stars October 19, 2009 My then-boyfriend/now-fiance and I recently got engaged after having been together for 3 & 1/2 years. We were given this book by my mom who had heard from someone at her church that it was "a great book". I took a couple of hours to read through it last night, and decided that it's not for us. It's true that it is trite and not very enlightening; as other reviewers have said the get-to-know-each-other questions are shallow and basic. Also, the authors have really traditional and in my opinion oppressive ideas about women's roles in marriage, i.e. that God created them solely for the purpose of being helpers to their husbands, and homemakers. And yes, they really do use the word "homemaker". Another thing about this book that turns me off is the fact that throughout the book the authors are constantly recommending that you buy other books published by the same company. At one point they even list the 1-800 number you can call to place your order in the middle of a paragraph.
A different book that my fiance and I have been reading and found to be much more helpful is Sacred Marriage by Gary L. Thomas. In my opinion it's much deeper and more insightful than this one. Better for more mature, and perhaps less traditionally conservative, Christian couples.
| | Wonderful resource by J. Anderson 5 Stars September 21, 2009 It was very helpful for us as we went through the process of being married. It brought up a lot of questions that we had not considered.
| | Good so Far by Legally Brown (Maryland) 4 Stars September 17, 2009 We are a couple thinking of marriage and wanted to go through this book BEFORE engagement to make sure we were on one accord. We have only just begun to do this. I would recommend getting one for each of you. The only critique I have so far is that it's hard to write in the book without a spiral binding. Other than that it seems pretty insightful.
| | Excellent Tool for Engaged Couples by Skye Jackson 5 Stars September 05, 2009 My fiancee and I really enjoyed this book. It's full of biblical principles and of sound practical advice. Couple this with pre-marital counseling and good communication and I believe your marriage will start off on very solid ground!
| | Excellent resource to help communication by E. Neal (United States) 5 Stars August 19, 2009 I used this when I was engaged (9 years ago). It was very helpful at the time and is neat now to compare expectations then with reality now. The book helped direct our conversation and make us think through and discuss things that are not really "romantic" but totally practical and necessary to talk about to make a marriage actually work smoothly.
