| Grandma loved the "eye candy"... by Sarah T. Penn (Portland, OR) 5 Stars August 19, 2009 My grandmother purchased this book, not long after it was released. She probably picked it up because of all the beautiful pictures of mouthwatering dishes! My mom and I suspect that Grandma never cooked a single recipe out of this cookbook, because she was in failing health, and was spending little time in the kitchen at that point. After Grandma passed on, my Grandfather gave my Mother the cookbook. It sat on my mom's cookbook shelf for over a year, until I came to visit this summer. We were up late one night talking about recipies, and Mom pulled the Mayo Cookbook off the shelf so I could look at it. We decided that we would have to try a few of the recipes that very week! I loved the cookbook so much that I purchased my own copy, and had it mailed to my home 2000 miles away.
Since then, I have made 2 more recipies from this cookbook for my family. Due to the economy, I am on an extreme budget for my family's groceries. Luckily, we planted a garden this year, so much of our produce for the recipies come straight from the garden to the kitchen. Some of the ingredients are spendy. For instance, to make the Watermelon-Cranberry Agua Fresca, you need fruit-sweetened cranberry juice... which is almost $5 a bottle. However, you only need 1 cup for the recipe, so I have decided to freeze the rest for later use! This recipe is a great way to use up over-ripe watermelon!
Even with our limited budget, I have decided that we will try/use at least one recipe from this cookbook a week! They are so yummy, healthy, and reasonably priced (when you consider cost/use of the more expensive ingredients). All in all 5 stars!
| | My Fav Cookbook by GirlyBookGirl (New Jesey, USA) 5 Stars February 12, 2009 This cookbook is deceiving-- it seems like a lot of typical recipes so while I did buy it, I did not try any of them for quite sometime. Well! I've been using it for the past month and have to say-- everything is very flavorful and an interesting combination of flavors. The recipes are not complicated and the ingredients are easily available. It is definitely my favorite cookbook and I love knowing that I am healthy, great tasting food.
| | love it! by Anita Penn (San Antonio) 5 Stars January 09, 2009 I have tried more recipees from this cook-book than any other. Perhaps the pictures are so enticing I can't help myself. A few dishes I've tried were just okay, but most were fantastic! My only complaint is that most of the recipees are quite time-consuming. You can however find shortcuts once you've had a little practice with them. (For example I love the turkey pot pie and have found that it is just as good if I substitute frozen edamame, artichokes and pearl onions for fresh ones and used pre-prepared matchstick carrots instead of doing all that chopping myself.) Best of all you know that despite the delicousness - you are eating healthy food!!
| | One of the Best! by Laura P. Colo (Pensacola, Florida United States) 5 Stars July 03, 2008 This cookbook has extraordinary dishes. I'm surprised by some comments, in other reviews, that state the recipes are complicated or require obscure ingredients. Yes, there are more than 5 ingredients in most recipes, but that's because:
A) The recipes offer dishes that use minimal refined ingredients...Hence, you have to mix the 'raw' ingredients (as they are found in nature) in yourself. After all aren't you buying this book as a guide to eating more healthily?
B) Many of the 'extra ingredients' are spices that, for the most part, are readily available. Using your own spices - especially fresh spices - make a WORLD of difference in recipes. If you have extra fresh spices left over, simply chop and freeze in distilled (or purified water) in ice cube trays. You'll have ready/fresh spices to use in the future.
I'm not at all put off by the extra ingredients or steps. This cookbook provides exactly what I was looking for...unique recipes that are healthy in every sense of the word while also being very, very tasty.
I'm 100% satisfied and would purchase this book all over again. A claim I rarely make with cookbooks. Usually there's a handful of recipes that suit me or are truly healthy. I plan to try every single one...They are that good. The eating advice presented is sound and easy to follow.
| | Amazing recipes! by C. Quigley 5 Stars January 01, 2008 I love cooking, but I can sometimes get bored with it. I received this cookbook as a gift and LOVED IT! It has nutritional facts for each recipe, tells you how many servings of dairy/protein/fat/vegetables/fruits each recipe has, and general "healthy eating habits"
I get excited about cooking this stuff because I know it will taste good and be healthy for me. BLACK BEAN BURGER IS TO DIE FOR!!!!
