Nanomaterials Handbook

Nanomaterials Handbook
by Yury Gogotsi (Editor)

Even before it was identified as a science and given a name,  nanotechnology was the province of the most innovative inventors. In medieval times, craftsmen, ingeniously employing nanometer-sized gold particles, created the enchanting red hues found in the gold ruby glass of cathedral windows. Today, nanomaterials are being just as creatively used to improve old products, as well as usher in new ones. From tires to CRTs to sunscreens, nanomaterials are becoming a part of every industry. ...

Polymer nanocomposites

Polymer nanocomposites
by Yiu-Wing Mai (Editor), Zhong-Zhen Yu (Editor)

Offering improved barrier properties, fire resistance, and strength, polymer nanocomposites are increasingly desirable as coating, structural, and packaging materials in a wide range of automobile, civil, and electrical engineering applications. Polymer Nanocomposites offers a comprehensive review of the main types of polymer nanocomposites and their properties. Part I reviews the range of layered silicates and discusses such properties as flammability, thermal stability, barrier properties,...

Handbook of Nanoscience, Engineering, and Technology, Second Edition (The Electrical Engineering Handbook Series)

Handbook of Nanoscience, Engineering, and Technology, Second Edition (The Electrical Engineering Handbook Series)
by William A. Goddard III (Editor), Donald W. Brenner (Editor), Sergey Edward Lyshevski (Editor), Gerald J. Iafrate (Editor)

The ability to study and manipulate matter at the nanoscale is the defining feature of 21st-century science. The first edition of the standard-setting Handbook of Nanoscience, Engineering, and Technology saw the field through its infancy. Reassembling the preeminent team of leading scientists and researchers from all areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology along with several new pioneers, this second edition will guide the field through its burgeoning adolescence.

The phenomenal growth...

Product Description
Since their discovery more than a decade ago, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have held scientists and engineers in captive fascination, seated on the verge of enormous breakthroughs in areas such as medicine, electronics, and materials science, to name but a few. Taking a broad look at CNTs and the tools used to study them, Carbon Nanotubes: Properties and Applications comprises the efforts of leading nanotube researchers led by Michael O’Connell, protégé of the late father of nanotechnology, Richard Smalley. Each chapter is a self-contained treatise on various aspects of CNT synthesis, characterization, modification, and applications. The book opens with a general introduction to the basic characteristics and the history of CNTs, followed by discussions on synthesis methods and the growth of “peapod” structures. Coverage then moves to electronic properties and band structures of single-wall nanotubes (SWNTs), magnetic properties, Raman spectroscopy of electronic and chemical behavior, and electromechanical properties and applications in NEMS (nanoelectromechanical systems). Turning to applications, the final sections of the book explore mechanical properties of SWNTs spun into fibers, sidewall functionalization in composites, and using SWNTs as tips for scanning probe microscopes. Taking a fresh look at this burgeoning field, Carbon Nanotubes: Properties and Applications points the way toward making CNTs commercially viable.
