Unanswered questions and lacking references by Mark Rhodes (Pleasanton, CA) 3 Stars
November 05, 2009
I have been a long time GERD victim so I am hopeful that the acid supplementation the author recommends will work for me. However, I have unanswered questions. The author states that acid supplementation can eliminate heartburn in many people that have low acid levels. He does not explain how low stomach acid levels actually causes heartburn. He writes that the culrpit is the LES and not the acid, but he never closes the loop and explains how or if the low acid levels casues the LES to open. To me, this seems like an important part of the picture. My other gripe is that that he has no references for the core of his treatment plan: HCL supplementation. There are scores of references for other topics but none are about taking extra HCL. This leaves me wondering if he is the only proponent of HCL supplementation.

i was recently diagnosed with Barretts Esophagus. someone told me about this book. i can't do some of the things suggested, but i am using the lemon juice, DGL and the pancreatin digestive enzymes they have helped me a lot, and i also bought one of those pillows that are made for people with Barrett's, so that i don't have to elevate the head of my bed. i have stopped burping every few seconds, and that is such a relief. i am thankful for this book.

Packed Red Blood Cell Mineral Analysis Can Reveal Gastric Acid Deficiency by Steven Sponaugle 5 Stars
June 11, 2009
Why Stomach Acid is Good for You reveals the truth that most Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disorder, GERD, and indigestion is caused by inadequate gastric acid, instead of excess gastric acid. These disorders can usually be treated with inexpensive supplements, available from health food stores. Interestingly, one of our patients was able to lose weight when he began taking Betaine Hydrochloride to reduce abdominal bloating and pressure. Jonathan Wright, MD, Medical Director of the renowned Tahoma Clinic apparently measures gastric acid levels in all of his patients and presents considerable evidence of widespread hypochloridia. Recently published research reveals increased osteoporosis and fracture risk, in patients using proton pump inhibitors (the Purple Pill) and antiacids. Antaacids are needed sometimes, to protect the esophagus while control of excess vomiting from migraines or cancer occurs, although they are among the most overused and overprescribed medications in the United States. Although Florida Detox and Wellness Institute does not order the Heidelberg acid analysis, we have confirmed gastric acid deficiency, using erythrocyte mineral analysis and hair mineral analysis. We prefer measuring red cell mineral levels, to determine relative tissue mineral deficiency. We have also successfully treated many reflux patients with the limonene capsules described in this book. Most pernicious anemia can be treated with sublingual Vitamin B12, although some of our pernicious anemia patients have required Vitamin B12 injections. Zinc deficiency, secondary to insufficient gastric acid can cause immune deficiency and acne. We are presently testing one of our hypochloridic patients for intestinal parasites, after we measured an Immunoglobin A deficiency. Dr. Amin tested over a thousand American patients for parasites and found 32 percent were infected with parasites. Recently, parasite testing 5,000 times more sensitive than methods used by Dr. Amin, has become available. What percent of Americans will be found infected with parasites, using newer, more sensitive test procedures? Gastric acid is our first line of protection against these parasites. How many Americans are actually infected with parasites, because they are using unnecessary acid blocking medications? Steven Sponaugle Research Director Florida Detox

incredible! by not coughing anymore 5 Stars

I stumbled upon this book as I was looking for alternatives to the anti-acid medication I was taking (Ranitidine)that was giving me such bad gas that I was doubled over in pain. This journey started over year ago when I began having an unexplained chronic cough. My doctor naturally thought it was allergies and the post nasal drip was causing the cough. I never really had allergies before but I trusted that the doctor knew what he was doing. I took the allergy medication for two months with no improvement. I tried acupuncture, eliminating dairy, wheat and gluten to no avail. At this point, I was coughing every few minutes and my life was revolving around how to get rid of this cough. My cough had gotten so bad that I couldn't eat anything salty or crunch without almost gagging. My esophagus was so irritated that I was having a hard time swallowing my food. In desperation, I went back to my doctor and insisted that he listen to my symptoms and do some testing. One of the possibilities he came up with was that I might have GERD (I had never heard of it) and that my cough might be related to stomach acid. He prescribed Ranitidine and within a few day my cough stopped. I had also modified my diet; no chocolate, limit coffee and alcohol and no soda. I also ate smaller, more frequent meals. I was so happy to no longer be coughing that I put up with the gas and bloating that the medication caused. For over five months, I was cough-free and so relieved! Every now and then my cough would start up again so I doubled up on the medications and it went away. I didn't like the idea of being on this medicine forever, so I gradually weaned myself off of it. For three months, I was able to control my cough with being very careful about what I ate and drank. However, two weeks ago, I over did it. I ate pizza and drank more that I should have. I started coughing again. I went back on the Ranitidine but the cough did not stop. After two days of being on the medicine, I was literally doubled over in pain from boating and gas. In desperation, I went online to do some research and that is when I found this book. I had no idea that low stomach acid could cause GERD. I read the book reviews from the other people and decided to buy this book. As I waited for it to arrive, I did some more research, and found many common themes all of which supported the ideas in this book. I immediately stopped taking the Ranitidine and went to the health food store and bought some Betaine HCL with pepsin. I have been taking the Betaine with every meal for the last week, and I the coughing has disappeared. I also feel more alert and energetic. I have terrible athletes feet and they are looking much better since I started taking the Betaine HCL. This book opened my eyes to the very damaging effects of antacids. The doctors in this book do a very thorough and detailed job of explaining the importance of having enough stomach acid in your system. This book is very important and the book reviews have been helpful as well.
