Excellent Book. by Gary Peterson (San Diego, California USA) 5 Stars

I purchased the book "Rocks From Space (Second Edition)" about seven years ago. My main interest in space is in the field of planetary geology and I have a need to be reasonably conversant with the subscience of meteoritics. The "Rocks From Space" book was recommended by several colleagues, and I also noted that it had received good reviews. In general, I find "popular" books directed to the interests of amateurs to be shallow and even corny. "Rocks From Space" is an exception. This book is outstanding. It provides a concise but excellent introduction to the subjects of meteorites, asteroids, comets, meteors and impact sites. It is presented in a way that amateur collectors, amateur astronomers or anyone interested in these space-related subjects can easily read and understand, but, at the same time, it is very informative and authoritative. I would not hesitate to recommend the book to anyone who was interested in meteorites and other space debris. In fact, I have recommended it to countless individuals as an excellent place to start. "Rocks From Space" is well written, well illustrated and interesting to read. It has achieved a permanent and respected place in my reference book collection. I give talks on planetary geology to groups of geologists and astronomers and I use some of the illustrations in my presentations. For people who are interested is collecting meteorites, Norton presents a series of guidelines, anecdotes and useful information including a list of laboratories where one might get an identification confirmed. For a small and inexpensive paperback, this book contains a wealth of information. Gary Peterson

Rocks from Space, an overview. by G. L. Lohmann (San Diego, CA, USA) 5 Stars

Excellent book, especially for the beginning/intermediate meteorite collecter. Written in easy-to-understand English, yet technical when it needs to be. Very comprehensive on the subject, and well illustrated with photographs and drawings.

VERY ENTERTAINING BOOK ON METEORITES!! by B. Sobel (Madisonville Kentucky) 5 Stars
January 11, 2007
Norton is a rare author who combines detailed knowledge of a subject with very entertaining stories. Once I started reading some of the chapters I just could not put it down. On the other hand, it also includes chapters which are technical (and sometimes beyond my understanding in some cases)! It therefore has something for everyone from beginner to advanced, collector or even a noncollector simply interested in the subject. This is a great introduction and very well written. It was not the first book on metorites I read, but should have been!

Field Guide to Meteors and Meteorites (Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series)
by O. Richard Norton (Author), Lawrence A. Chitwood (Author)

It is said that astronomy is one of the few remaining fields in which amateurs can make a real contribution to science, and nowhere is this more true than in the field of meteors and meteorites.

Although meteors are isolated and unpredictable, it is possible to predict when meteor showers - usually associated with old comets - are due; they last a couple of days, during which many meteors can be observed in a single night. Equipment for watching, counting and even measuring meteors...

Souvenirs from Space: The Oscar E. Monnig Meteorite Gallery
by Judy Alter (Author)

This book, written for young people ages eight to twelve, tells readers in clear terms what meteorites are, where they come from, what kinds there are, how to look for them, and what to look for if you find a rock you think might be a meteorite. It encourages scientific exploration because the truth is anyone can find a meteorite.

Souvenirs from Space also tells the story of Fort Worth lawyer Oscar Monnig who became known as the "Meteorite Man from Texas." He spent many years...

Meteorites: Their Impact on Science and History
by Brigitte Zanda (Editor), Monica Rotaru (Editor), Roger Hewins (Editor)

What are meteorites? Where do they come from? Are they a threat? What are they made of? How common are they? As centuries have passed, our knowledge of these extraterrestrial objects has advanced immensely, and today, the scientific study of meteorites provides a wealth of information about the solar system. Meteorites reveal clues to some of the greatest scientific enigmas:

the origin of life on Earth the mass extinction of species the nature and composition of asteroids the...

Meteorites: A Journey through Space and Time

Meteorites: A Journey through Space and Time
by Bevan A (Author)

Meteorites, the fragments of space debris that survive their fall to Earth, have much to tell us. They hold the answers to the complexities of star formation and can explain the earliest events in the birth of the solar system. They also may have brought to Earth the water in the oceans, gases of the atmosphere, and other essential ingredients for the evolution of life.
