EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description Microbial Life captures the richness, the intellectual excitement, and present-day understanding of the role of the microbe in evolution, human health, and in our lives. It is written for sophomore to senior undergraduates who have a general understanding of chemical concepts and biochemistry. Rob Gunsalus, who has taught introductory microbiology at UCLA for 20 years, has joined the author team and is solely responsible for Parts II and III on physiology, growth, and metabolism. The Second Edition has been redesigned to help students study and learn more effectively. New pedagogical features include: redesigned chapter openers with clearly defined objectives; Section Highlights and Chapter Summaries that help students retain key information and terminology; an enhanced illustration program, with balloon captions that clarify complex processes and concepts; and icons directing students to additional resources on a new Companion Website. |

| | A Four-Headed Beast? by M. G. Keen (Raleigh, NC) 3 Stars August 22, 2009 Microbial Life follows in the style of the best-selling undergraduate microbiology textbook, Brock's Biology of Microorganisms (BBOM), which is to say it is all-inclusive, encyclopedic and cram-packed with great photographs and photomicrographs. BBOM has a single editor, who has done an admirable job of overseeing its consistency. Microbial Life weighs in at about the same size as BBOM however, with four editors, suffers from organizational problems and the subsequent a lack of consistency. Sections of this textbook are excellent, whereas others require revision and indicate the need for a single, strong editorial hand. Encyclopedic microbiology textbooks like Microbial Life and BBOM appear to being written for course instructors who pick and choose amongst their vast amounts of information rather than the undergraduate students who purchase them. Future editions of both texts need to consider the latter group.
