EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description An uptodate survey of the current exciting state of telomere biology. Telomeresspecialized structures found at the ends of chromosomes are essential for maintaining the integrity of chromosomes and their faithful duplication during cell division. Chapters in this volume cover telomere structure and function in a range of organisms, focusing on how they are maintained, their roles in cell division and gene expression, and how deficiencies in these structures contribute to cancers and other diseases and even aging. |
CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 5.0 based on 1 review)
| Very Up To Date Report on Current Research by John Matlock (Winnemucca, NV) 5 Stars March 17, 2006 It has been ten years since the first edition of this book. In that decade interest in telomeres has skyrocketed as a relation between telomeres and cancer has become more likely.
As is common with fields that are developing so rapidly, no 'standard' textbook has been written because it would become out of date so fast. Instead this book is a compendium of articles from researchers from around the world. Each of the articles has been peer reviewed and selected for this book by the editiors, each of whom is a pioneer in the field. The articles come from laboratories literally around the world, where ever the most important basic research is being conducted.
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press is a very fast publisher. The basic material was finally collected for the book in July of 2005. By November of that year the book was in print. This means that the research being described is current to within half a year -- remarkably short timing for a published hardback book.

| Elizabeth Blackburn and the Story of Telomeres: Deciphering the Ends of DNA by Catherine Brady (Author)
Molecular biologist Elizabeth Blackburn—one of Time magazine’s 100 “Most Influential People in the World” in 2007—made headlines in 2004 when she was dismissed from the President's Council on Bioethics after objecting to the council's call for a moratorium on stem cell research and protesting the suppression of relevant scientific evidence in its final report. But it is Blackburn's groundbreaking work on telomeric DNA, which launched the field of telomere research, that will have the...

| Molecular Biology of the Cell, Fourth Edition by Bruce Alberts (Author), Alexander Johnson (Author), Julian Lewis (Author), Martin Raff (Author), Keith Roberts (Author), Peter Walter (Author)
Molecular Biology of the Cell is the classic in-depth text reference in cell biology. By extracting the fundamental concepts from this enormous and ever-growing field, the authors tell the story of cell biology, and create a coherent framework through which non-expert readers may approach the subject. Written in clear and concise language, and beautifully illustrated, the book is enjoyable to read, and it provides a clear sense of the excitement of modern biology. Molecular Biology of the Cell...

| Epigenetics by C. David Allis (Author), Thomas Jenuwein (Author), Danny Reinberg (Author), Marie-Laure Caparros (Author)
The regulation of gene expression in many biological processes involves epigenetic mechanisms. In this new volume, 24 chapters written by experts in the field discuss epigenetic effects from many perspectives. There are chapters on the basic molecular mechanisms underpinning epigenetic regulation, discussion of cellular processes that rely on this kind of regulation, and surveys of organisms in which it has been most studied. Thus, there are chapters on histone and DNA methylation, siRNAs...

| The RNA World, Third Edition (Cold Spring Harbor Monograph Series) by Raymond F. Gesteland (Author), Raymond F. Gesteland (Editor)
Recent studies on the activities of RNA in the cell have revolutionized our understanding of the many roles played by this molecule. The first two editions of The RNA World (1993, 1999) shed light on the pre–biotic era dominated by this versatile molecule, and provided an overview of the state of RNA research at the time. The new third edition of The RNA World updates this perspective, describing the vast array of newly discovered roles for RNA in the modern world. The updated original...

| Regulatory RNAs by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (Author), Bruce Stillman (Editor), David Stewart (Editor)
Regulatory RNAs" was the theme of the 71st annual Cold Spring Harbor Symposium on Quantitative Biology, where scientists from around the world presented the latest advances in the biology of RNAs, including RNA interference, transcriptional and translational control, RNA editing, and the role of RNAs in biological circuits and epigenetic events. Investigators discussed the latest technologies aimed at large-scale characterization of RNAs, as well as the roles of small RNAs in development and...
