Sperm Whales: Social Evolution in the Ocean

Sperm Whales: Social Evolution in the Ocean
by Hal Whitehead (Author)

Famed in story as "the great leviathans," sperm whales are truly creatures of extremes. Giants among all whales, they also have the largest brains of any creature on Earth. Males can reach a length of sixty-two feet and can weigh upwards of fifty tons.

With this book, Hal Whitehead gives us a clearer picture of the ecology and social life of sperm whales than we have ever had before. Based on almost two decades of field research, Whitehead describes their biology, behavior, and habitat;...

Humpback Whales (World Life Library)

Humpback Whales (World Life Library)
by Phil Clapham (Author)

The humpback whale must have played a role in establishing a mythology that spoke darkly of sea monsters and of sirens singing strange songs that lured sailors to their deaths. These magnificent whales also inspired greed, however, and a species that filled the world's oceans for perhaps seven million years was almost wiped out in less than a century.

Humpback Whales introduces the general reader to the environmental and human threats, the life history, and the many fascinating traits of...

Right Whales (World Life Library)

Right Whales (World Life Library)
by Phil Clapham (Author)

No species better illustrates the damage done by humans to the great whales than the right whale. Considered by whalers as the "right" whale to kill, this slow, plankton-feeding giant was first hunted in European waters at least a thousand years ago. Huge numbers were slaughtered worldwide until the whaling finally stopped.

This unique portrait contains a text packed with facts and field experiences, alongside rare photographs of the whales. It reveals their natural history, discusses...

Blue Whales (WorldLife Library Series)
by John Calambokid (Author)

Blue whales are the largest animals ever to have lived on earth--even larger than any of the known dinosaurs. While they are found in all the oceans of the world, they are also an endangered species. Earlier this century many populations were hunted to almost extinction and may never recover. John Calambokidis introduces general readers to blue whales, examining their habitats, behaviors, and movements, and describing efforts that are being made to protect these rare giants worldwide. ...

Minke Whales (WorldLife Library Series)

Minke Whales (WorldLife Library Series)
by A. Rus Hoelzel (Author), S. Jonathan Stern (Author)

Minke whales are the most abundant, and in recent years, the most persecuted of the baleen whales. And yet they are not well known, sometimes even to those who are interested in marine mammals. This fascinating book reviews the biology and behavior of the minke whale and the history of our understanding and interactions with them.
