CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.5 based on 76 reviews)
| Doing what comes naturally by Amaranth (Northern California) 3 Stars September 26, 2009 "The Art of Natural Family Planning" provides a safe, healthful alternative to the Pill and condoms. While artificial contraceptives have been condemned since the Didache (Teachings of the Apostles) and weren't given a thumbs' up from Christians till the Anglican Lambeth Conference in 1930, NFP provides a viable alternative. On a positive note, the Kippleys explain the science. Since all women's cycles are different, this book works for any woman. It's clear, simple, helpful. The "courtship" and "honeymoon" phases keep the communication alive. The Kippleys also note that some contraceptives do,in fact, cause abortion.
Unfortunately, the Kippleys also add to the Scriptures. While artificial contraceptives have been condemned since the time of the Apostles, marital sodomy never has. It's quite unBiblical. The 6th and 9th Commandments command against adultery and sexual covetousness--nowhere in the Bible does God tell spouses how to be intimate with each other. It's been shown that boredom in the bedroom leads to adultery, marital sexlessness, and porn addiction. Shouldn't the Kippleys be happy that spouses are orally and manually pleasing each other, rather than logging onto Playboy websites? When high numbers of men and women have admitted to marital infidelity, why do they condemn couples who engage in mutual (rather than solo) masturbation? The Kippleys, sad to say,are like the Pharisees who add to the laws given in the Bible. They claim "ancient Christian tradition"--when in fact it's recent.
"The Art of Natural Family Planning" ends up being more art than science. It's a shame they have the narrow-minded "there is ONLY ONE way for married couples to renew their vows" instead of following the 3 C's--as long as it's consensual, the spouses are comfortable, and there's no contraception,it's OK.
| | Good book for this planning! by seven girl 4 Stars August 28, 2009 Having been on the pill for years, I started hearing some not so nice things about it that could harm my body and also a fertalized egg, causing abortions. My husband and I decided it would be best to go off the pill, but we didn't want kids right away so I looked into some other things and actually heard about Natural Family Planning on a forum that I had joined.
This book was recommended by a woman on the forum so I bought it. It didn't take long to learn about the tempurature taking, but the mucus and cervix observations were a little more tricking. And though at the beginning of the book, the author assured me that I'd be able to understand all the terms they use, I found it a little difficult to keep track of all the terms and things. I guess I'll have to read it again.
Another thing was that the book was VERY Catholic. I realize that the people who wrote the book are Catholics, and so is the group that they run with this book, but there was a HUGE amount of space taken up near the end of the book about what certain popes and saints think about the family and having kids and things. I don't really care what the popes and saints think. I just want to know the reality of how this works. I think it would have saved a little bit of money if they would have left that portion out and written a separate book for all of that.
Anyway, over all, great informative book. I'd get it again. And theres a great section about breastfeeding for those of you who are about to have a baby. I now have complete assurance that I'll be breastfeeding the right way when we have kids.
| | Most comprehensive by AMR 5 Stars June 25, 2009 This is definitely the most comprehensive NFP book out there. I am a medical provider and I have always been an avid NFP woman. I personally know the effectiveness and benefits of NFP. I think this older version (4th edition) gives more detailed information for new NFP users. I have been able to teach patients and friends to use NFP effectively through this book, even with specific situations such as coming off the pill, long irregular cycles, or breast feeding amenhorrhea. The symtothermal method (STM) I believe is the most complete way to use NFP. I know there is a newer STM book out there, but I think it's too small and lacking in charting examples and specific situations. This Art of NFP book by the Kippleys is the way to go!
| | thorough by guppy (Florida, USA) 5 Stars April 07, 2009 I haven't read any other "fertility" books. This one is definitely a complete guide of how to concieve, avoid pregnancy, how fertility changes after pill, breastfeeding etc. Includes chapters on miscarriage also. I appreciate angle of staying hormone free. Has some catholic chapters - interesting.
| | complete reference book by a.c. (Texas) 5 Stars October 15, 2008 I dub the authors of this book "King and Queen of NFP". I have a copy of it in my bedroom and another one by the telephone. You do not have to read all of this reference book to learn nfp, but it will make you an expert in the field of nfp if you do. I have been using nfp since l983 (it is now 2008) and this book has had all the answers I have needed throughout my childbearing years. I have been teaching nfp for around 15 years and it has answered all the phone call questions that I have had as well. I have not had to look at other books or call other people...it's ALL here.
