Product Description
Once in a great while an extraordinary book is published that sets an entirely new standard in its field. A Manual of Acupuncture, published by Journal of Chinese Medicine Publications, is just such a book. Painstakingly researched over many years by Peter Deadman, editor-in-chief of The Journal of Chinese Medicine, and colleagues Mazin Al-Khafaji and Kevin Baker, this book has become the primary reference in the West for the study of acupuncture points and channels. With the subtle use of color to illustrate the acupuncture points and anatomical features, the new second edition of A Manual of Acupuncture is even more attractive and user-friendly than the first. Introductory chapters describe and illustrate the channels and collaterals, the various categories of points, and methods of selection, location, and needling. Ensuing chapters present each of the points of the 14 channels as well as the extra (miscellaneous) points, identified by their English and pinyin names, and Chinese characters. Each point is located in accordance with the most exacting anatomical standards to be found in any Western textbook. For each point there is a dedicated drawing, followed by regional body drawings. The quality of the 500 drawings is far superior to those in any other TCM text. There are also practical pointers for finding and needling the points, and cautionary information about what to avoid. In addition to point indexes by their English and pinyin names, there is an index identifying every part of the body reached by each of the channels, and separate indexes of point indications listed according to both TCM and biomedical symptoms.

A suggestion. Strongly consider the DVD Multimedia version of this text. by Quadradox (Helena, Montana United States) 5 Stars

You'll need to search for the treasure -- a DVD multimedia verison of this, but well worth the effort. If you search under Deadman and acupuncture you will find a link; it is not sold directly by Amazon but can be found through other retailers (including Amazon partners). Its just what I have been looking for -- the whole textbook unabridged but maximized for interactive benefits by multimedia DVD-ROM. While I value many of the features of QPunctureII, a similar product, this one simultaneous excels in its study tools for students and in its value as a reference for more experienced practitioners. There are well designed sections detailing out the anatomy of critical landmarks such as the spinous processes, ribs, and other bony landmarks. Provides solid coverage on precautions to take when needling near organs. Contains both point by point information plus details of the major meridians, extraordinary points and chinese names. Multi-media features include brief very good resolution videos and chinese pronunciation of point names, easily available at the touch of a link for every point. The interactive highlight is its flexibility as a study tool which allows one to practice locating points by identifying body region and then underlying key anatomical structures like one would feel under the skin depicted in the next deeper level of the drawing. (I wish it allowed one more optional layer for clarifying location of nearby nerves, blood vessels, muscles/ligament groups and their names -- with some way to rehearse these as well). Practice tests can be configured as needed for studying particular meridians. I especially like being able to contruct my own point combinations as desired for treating particular illnesses or regional pain problems. One can focus this process to rehearse Chinese names, too. The testing features makes studying so much more meaningful -- helps one identify where additional work is needed and builds confidence. Given that every school seems to have a few of their own "special" pearls or point variations to learn -- it is extremely important to find a means to add in notes as well. This program allows you to do so. Deadman's Textbook/DVD multimedia program has already proven to be one of my favorite essential resources. I expect it to be a companion for a long to come. Physicians acupuncturists will need to be mindful that the points are understandably determined by WHO international nomenclature, and there will be small variations in preferred locations for some individualized purposes.

The bood did an excellent job in describing each single spot. Beginner may find it carry too much information in detail. But advanced practitioners may find it very useful. Again, as its title suggests, it is a MANUAL of acupuncture.

The standard text for students of Acupuncture by Rlee (Long Island, NY) 5 Stars

I am finishing up my first year as an Oriental Medicine student and this book is without a doubt my favorite and most used. Great thumb indexes to locate chapters on specific meridians easily. Yin and Yang meridians are paired together but separate chapters, making studying very easy. Excellent graphics for point locations, no nonsense descriptions of functions and indications and lengthly discussion on the most used points. If your school is not making this it's standard text...find a new school!
