Prostate Brachytherapy Made Complicated 2nd Edition by Paul W. Todd (Indiana) 4 Stars
October 14, 2009
The text is written for practitioners. The third edition costs over $150; however, available 2nd editions for as little as $6 could be used as must-read for the informed prostate cancer patient contemplating or planning to have brachytherapy (radioactive seed implants). Professionals should definitely read the 3rd edition, which adds a very important practioner-author (Merrick)and should not rely on the 2nd edition that I read as a patient. Kent Wallner writes with a rather whimsical style, which does not detract from the authoritative nature of the book. The book has very few wasted words -- good for the busy reader. I am 3 weeks post-procedure and heartily appreciate the wisdom this book has given to me as an informed patient.

A wonderful book: simple, clear and entertaining by Faisal S. Vali (USA) 5 Stars
October 25, 2008
Dr. Wallner is a legend in the field - and his book explains the art of prostate brachytherapy in a simple, clear and engaging fashion. His writing style is fun and easy to read and the coverage is quite comprehensive when it comes to LDR (fyi: not much on HDR). In addition, the book is peppered with figures, graphs, schematics and examples that really help explain some of the more challenging concepts behind prostate brachytherapy quite well. He comments on all(?) the controversies (which seed is better, the role of supplemental beam, the role of ADT, when not to implant, CT vs MRI vs TRUS, intraoperative vs preplan approach, incidence of side-effects, malpractice issues...), cites evidence where it exists, and calls out the brachytherapy community when he feels they have arrived at premature conclusions (i.e. without sufficient evidence). If you are interested in this topic - you'll very likely enjoy reading this book quite a bit - you have my word.
