One of the best self-help reads... by P. Brunson (New Jersey) 4 Stars

I have skimmed through a ton of self-help books and wasted a lot of money. This is the one of the best purchases I've made in a long while. Her examples of this Julia character mimics on my own life during the past twenty years. As I was reading, it touched on every nerve. If you have esteem/confidence issues, I highly recommend this book.

One of the most important books I'v ever read by Ivi (NC, USA) 5 Stars

This is a life changing book for sure. Low Self-Esteem is so trivialized that most people just try not to pay much attention to it or follow simple advice given in magazines. What I didn't know is how much LSE affects every area of a person's life, like realtionships, professional life, being a parent (low self esteem passes on). There are so many emotional/mental issues a person can suffer from and we just tend to think about them as simple personality defects. Nobody thinks twice about them let alone link them to LSE. I wanted to have healthy self esteem and not have to live with all that pain so I tried to buy the best possible book on the subject and started to research self-esteem books. That's when I find this one. It was like a book written about and only for you and the problems you've always felt but didn't even know had names and didn't even know they are part of low self-esteem! While it absolutely devastated me the first time I read this book and was painful to face the memories (cried a lot too), but managed to finish the book and it was absolutely worth it! Chapter 1, Low Self-Esteem: What is it? How is This Negative View Formed? Who Suffers from Low Self-Esteem? Sorensen Self-Esteem Test C2, Facing Fear and Anxiety Four Specific Fears Accompanying Low Self-Esteem Two Extremes: Underachievers and Overachivers Attaining New Skills: Floaters and Paddlers C3,When Life is a Minefield The Self-Esteem Attack Triggering Incidents Memory Loss C4 Ending the Self-Sabotage Rigidity Getting Needs Met through Others Two Extremes: Noisy Reactors and Quiet Reactors C5, Learning to be alone The Experience of Being Alone Being Alone: The Real Issues for Those with LSE Extroversion and Introversion Why Even Be in a Relationship C6, Listening to and Controlling Our Inner Voice Self-Talk Distorted Thinking Two Extremes: Superiority or Inferiority Comparison with Others Feelings Can Be Changed C7, The Search for Unconditional Love Feeling Unlovable The Need to Be Loved and Accepted When Trust is Broken Feelings Ignored and Devalued The Anger-Guilt Cycle C8, The Relentless Pursuit of Validation The Set-up and Testing Two Extremes in Relating Counting Behaviors Scenarios Hidden Agendas Unequal Partners C9 Altering the Patterns of LSE Stage 1: The Critical Incident Stage 2: Devastation S3: Anger S4: Scenario-Building S5: Confrontation S6: Return to Rationality Assertive, Passive, Aggressive, and Passive-Aggressive C10 Empowered to Build a New Life The Process of Change Why the Need for Therapy How to Choose a Therapist Also, at the end of each chapter there are writing excercises help you dig deep down and bring up long forgotten or even unrealized incidents from your past. Personally, they have been very helpful and a big first step but not enough to "cure" LSE. There is a companion Workbook which can be purchased separately and can be done along with this book. She suggests to read Breaking the Chain of LSE first then do the Workbook where at certain sections you will be redirected to this book. So you'll be working from the two together at times. What I really liked was that the Author not only explains LSE very thoroughly in every day language but through stories as well. After the stories She often has a little section; "A note of comparison with those with healthy self-esteem" where she explains how a person with healthy self esteem would have reacted to that particular situtation in the story. I've find this very useful since I wondered many times in my life what would have been the appropriate behaviour/reaction on my part. I hope this helped.

Breaking the Chain of Low Self-Esteem I am working with this book and the workbook by the same therapist.I personally find this work to be much easier reading and working with than others I have read.Earlier I tried the books by Melanie Fennell, but for me the Fennell book, the way it was presented became cumbersome and did not have an easy flow to digest. For me the Fennell book just wasn't user friendly. I personally find the Sorensen book much more user friendly.

This book should be required reading as parenting guide to create strong, healthy self esteem within the next generation. It reinforces the power of the mind, thoughts and words that build or break bridges with a perception on how we view ourselves from adolscent to adulthood. The book have helped me to identify and acknowledge my own personal struggles with an higher awareness of my negative thinking and hope for tomorrow. I would recommend it anyone who struggle with depression and self esteem issues.

Whether you feel you struggle from personal issues relating to LSE, you will find this book well worth the time it takes (it's a very easy read) to complete. If you don't discover "you", I can guarantee you will recognize behaviors (and be able to assign meaning) you have experienced among others in your life. It explains so much of the "crap" we all seem to (some more than others, and still some for a lifetime) endure. At times, it may seem repetitive, but that is becasue the author realizes people must read similar evidence/passages several times before their brains will not dismiss the information but assimilate into their memory. By this, she does us all a favor. Don't miss an opportunity to read this book and enjoy the learning experience, and perhaps, the change, it will bring to your life.
