| The Bible of Breast Reconstruction by plainjane64 (D/FW, TX) 5 Stars October 27, 2009 Kathy Steligo's writing style is upbeat and UNBIASED. She spells out the facts in language everyone can understand,(Even us nurses who become patients!). I have had 2 abnormal breast issues over a 3 year period. Diagnosed w/ IDC(L breast), small and early-visible only on MRI on my 44th birthday 2008-yes REALLY! Found after participating in a heavy surveillance program. Heavy surveillance program justified after ADH removed. ADH picked up in 2006 in the R breast....and that was my first 41 yr old screening mammo.....It was motivated by a 13 yr older older sister's d(x) and treatment for DCIS. I AM the early detection posterchild! Nonetheless, there remains (today) still no prevention. Last year I visited many options: genetic testing(Me: BRCA neg), my reconstruction consult left me feeling mildly ambivalent about implants. I ended up doing lumpectomy and rads in 2008. Nonetheless...I was pretty sure I ultimately didn't want to keep my ducts and lobules. I was fortunate to have the time to read, study, contemplate, pray and PREPARE for this journey. And I'm SO grateful. This book was provided by a wonderful local (for me) plastic/recon surgeon named Michel Saint-Cyr. This book, and divine intervention helped me make many very well thought out decisions that I do NOT regret. Most recently(September 2009) I am absolutely ELATED w/my new breasts which have been adopted from my abdomen via DIEP! I learned later(after putting 2 and 2 together) Kathy Steligo and I had the same phenomenal recon surgeon(Dr.DellaCroce). I am eternally grateful for EVERYONE who has been w/ me on this journey!
| | Phenomenal Resource by Annette Seelig 5 Stars July 19, 2009 This book is an indispensable guide for anyone facing mastectomy and breast reconstruction. Kathy gives clear, straightforward, detailed explanations for all types of reconstruction options available, allowing the reader to make informed decisions regarding their personal situation. Thank you Kathy for this phenomenal resource!
| | A must for anyone considering Breast Reconstruction by Snookies Mom (Maine) 5 Stars July 15, 2009 This book is recommended by the Center for Breast Surgery in New Oleans (NOLA). I've read about half the book and have learned more than I have after doing extensive internet research and having a consult with 2 plastic surgeons. This is the first resource [...] that names the doctors and centers that have the most experience with the different types of breast reconstuction. The discussion of potiential side effects is straightforward, not frightening, and gives actual percentage rates for each complication AND what can be done to deal with the complication if it arises. This is the first resouce I've found that doesn't just list the complications and stop the discussion, but gives information that reassures me that complications can be dealt with. Every woman who is diagnosed with breast cancer or the BRCA1 or BRCA@ gene mutation should read this book BEFORE starting ANY treatment, even before lumpectomy. This book gives the information needed to make a truly informed decision, info that a general surgeon doesn't give you but that you really need to know.
| | Excellent resource! by Gail (Macomb, MI USA) 5 Stars May 31, 2009 I read this book cover to cover after checking it out at my local library, but decided to purchase my own copy as a reference and to be able to loan it to others who may need to read it. As a person who was diagnosed with the BRCA2 mutation, I needed to make an informed decision regarding reconstruction after a bi-lateral mastectomy. This book was extremely helpful and I would recommend it to anyone facing a similar situation.
| | excellent book and very thorough by Renee Mira (Toronto) 5 Stars April 14, 2009 This book is a must read for those who are going through the difficult decisions related to breast reconstruction related to cancer diagnosis or BRCA identification. The author has researched the topic thoroughly and provides information that will allow women to not only have intelligent discussions with their doctors but to ask the necessary questions. I highly recommend this book.
