EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description A riveting, often humorous, non-fiction novel that chronicles Jacqueline Marcell's trials and tribulations, and eventual success at managing the care of her aging parents. Elder Rage is also an extensive self-help book with solutions for effective management, medically and behaviorally, of challenging elders who resist care. Includes answers to difficult "how to" questions like: getting obstinate elders to give up driving, accept a caregiver, see a different doctor, go to adult day care, move to a new residence--and includes a wealth of valuable resources, websites and recommended reading. The addendum by renowned dementia specialist, Rodman Shankle, MS MD: A Physician’s Guide to Treating Dementia, makes it valuable for everyone from the family to the physician. Elder Rage is required reading at several universities for graduate courses in geriatric assessment and management. |
CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 5.0 based on 300 reviews)
| The Best Book on Dementia by Jane 5 Stars September 28, 2009 Elder Rage is the most helpful book I have read on dealing with parents with dementia. Jacqueline Marcell is right on in describing a horrendous situation which she managed to handle with love, humor and persistence. I recognized every emotion as my own feelings when I cared for my Mother. If I had had this book then, I could have made life better for my Mother and myself. The difficulties she describes when dealing with the police, doctors and other caregivers are ones I have also encountered. The best part is that she found solutions! I found the parts where she described the differences between manipulation and dementia, sometimes a mixture of both, to be very helpful. The back of the book has extensive resources for finding further help and listing things that must be done, such as Durable Power of Attorney. This is the one book I would choose to keep of all the books I have read on dementia and dealing with elderly parents.
| | Worth buying by Rolling Stone (Todos Santos, Mexico) 5 Stars August 16, 2009 You will find this a useful resource if you are, or will be, involved in any way in the care giving of an elder. The body of the book is the author's personal experiences with her parents. I found myself both laughing and crying as I read. My family situation is very different but I took from it a message of resourcefulness and perseverance; she sets a good example. The appendices contain very valuable reference materials for people who are dealing with elders and are at wit's end. They are easily worth the price of the book. I am very glad to have found this book, and am glad she wrote it.
| | Exceptional Read by Joan M. Gardner (Lafayette, IN USA) 5 Stars August 13, 2009 This book handles a rather difficult topic exceptionally well. She gives much needed insight to help others handle the many obstacles involved in the care of an aging loved one. I found it difficult to put down and extremely helpful in many ways. Give it a try, I think you'll love it too.
| | A Must Read! by ronyln74 5 Stars July 21, 2009 What a great book! Funny and sad, it tells the poignant story of Jackie's struggles to get appropriate help for her elderly parents. If you have a parent who is not as competent as he/she once was, read this book. Jackie's journey will give you a road map to help navigate these murky waters. Her book personalizes the struggle many of us will face or are facing as our parents age and need assistance. Jackie's perserverance and her willingness to share her solutions have made this book a treasure. Buy this book. It will help you understand how to approach and solve problems with your aging parents and the caregiving world.
