The manufacture of methamphetamine is illegal. While once a legal pharmaceutical, the devastating health effects and propensity for addiction led to its criminalization. I use this book in practice as a public defender, with the assignment of a new meth lab or co-conspirator on a weekly basis. To understand this book requires a study of chemistry. (I made that effort.) An understanding of chemistry will also include laboratory techniques, from which the student will learn safety procedures. There may be no practical way that a simple book on synthesis can incorporate all the necessary precautions. The solvents and reagents involved in the production of meth may burn, explode, produce poisonous gases, or otherwise pose grave risks. It is not unusual to find children in the homes of meth producers, and so lawyers who practice family law in neglect cases leading to termination of parental rights may also want to know more about the details of meth and the byproducts of its production. (In our county, meth labs are marked on the county Geo Information System for the benefit of realtors and homeowners.) This book is well organized, appears to be accurate, and I recommend it to legal practitioners who deal with meth and its aftermath. If you plan to get involved in the production of meth, I suggest that you find a 6 by 8 closet, dimly lit, and sit in there for 20 days, eating boring food. Then, multiply that by 365, and you may begin to understand the 20-year felony you will be facing. Meth users will rat out their grandmother for a fix, turn you in so you cannot compete, or burn you out. In our state, the 2nd offense of ANY drug crime allows a doubling of the meth sentence. That way, if you live long enough to survive your first trip up-state, you can double down for a 2nd, final, ride. The book deserves five stars. Making meth is for idiots. If you are not yet an idiot, using meth can get you there.

The chemistry is legit, but awkward, and difficult follow. Also the chemistry is dangerous. Do not try this stuff. It is however, our right to profess chemistry even though the title compound is illegal, so worth the read, and the right to know.
