helathy diet and lots of effort is the way to manage lupus by Tiberius (Fulton) 5 Stars
September 21, 2009
One of my books concerning lupus discussed the merit of the vegetarian diet in regard to the kidney inflammation problems. If urine is bubbly that is a cue that the kidneys are having trouble with the protein (meat) so a reduction or elimination of meat will many times stop that response and calm the kidneys down. I went to soy and soy protein as my protein source and was able to get this kidney response to stop before I started feeling kidney problems my direction. I am learning quickly that if I want some control in my ability to have a life that diet changes really make a difference for me. Vegetarian seems to have alot of benefits if the diet is fresh, but obviously wash the fresh well to get the chemicals off of it and use fresh always. Many things will help the problems of lupus inflammation and we each have our own areas of challenge as no one seems to have the same issues in the same depth. I wish everyone well in their efforts. I will advocate hats though, thermal and large so they cover well. I wear a hat whenever I am outside even in the morning or later afternoon. I am never without a hat when I go outside. My butterfly has toned down a lot in making that effort. Mineral supplements like humic/fulvic which Amazon does sell has made incredible differences on my energy levels also. So many things help. It takes reading and trying things out and just keep working at it. I'm very grateful to writers who are sharing their experiences and their education for helping us all. I keep reading books about lupus control and diet suggestions for various people and life is getting better. The nightmares and the problems of lupus are becoming less as the approach to the battle becomes more clear. Improvements do come and life can be better. Stay away from gluten and processed foods as those just drain the energy and rocket the fatigue. As you can tell it takes a lot of work and effort and diet changes to get lupus under control. It is possible. I found eating the entire fruit in the night shade family actually helped the lupus, but it is the skins and seeds and everything that make that possible. So I can eat oranges and grapefruit if I will eat the entire fruit completely. I found real pineapple with the skins also makes incredible differences in the inflammation issues. Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme (found in real pineapple not canned) needful for digestive system and it does wonders for the inflammation issues, but it is eating the skins and everything that really make the difference and of course eating the real fruit (canned does nothing); the same for pears, many benefits to its skins and seeds in healing and aiding the digestion issues and the inflammation issues overall. There is great power in real fruit if eaten correctly. Studies I have read about discuss the power they found in results with real fruit versus canned. In my own experiences I can say the same. It is a night and day difference in a very short time frame since dropping canned fruit and going straight real fruit with pineapple, pears, grapefruit, oranges, but as I repeat again, the entire fruit, leaving nothing (except the top of the pineapple of course).

Lupus Recovery Diet by Denyse Corrado (Chevy Chase, MD) 5 Stars

I have found this book to be extremly helpful. Although, if taken word for word could be a bit extreme, the basic ideas are very sound. I have tried several of the recipes and they are quite good. Eliminating dairy, white flour and sugar has not only lessened joint pain, but has also helped reduce sinus inflammation. I was a vegetarian and am now a vegan. It has been easier to eliminate the cheese, yogart, eggs, et., than I thought, especially when the results is feeling better. Interested in long-term benefits/effects.

AMAZING LUPUS DIET THAT WORKS by K. Wilkes 5 Stars

I have had Lupus for over 20 years & have been on about every medicine available WITH ALL THE BAD SIDE EFFECTS. I was skeptical about this diet but desperate for a safer way to get rid of the pain. My doctor was amazed at how quickly my pain went from a constant "9" to a "2" and stayed there! I am healthier than I've been in years!

It's all about vegan by The Exchange (Washington, DC) 3 Stars

Presents a good argument for adopting a vegan diet as an alternative for managing autoimmune system disorders. It may be worth a try in lieu of Prednisone, Plaqenil, Cellcept and every other drug my rheumatologist keeps prescribing.

This book is just what I was looking for- a guide to managing my Lupus-like disease naturally. I only started the diet 2 days ago, so I cannot yet vouch for its efficacy, but a vegan diet is mentioned in numerous places elsewhere in terms of its benefit to those with autoimmunity. Ms. Harrington lays out a plan and justification, offering information as well as support. It can be overwhelming and confusing to look at all the health information out there on managing these illnesses, but this plan is where I choose to start.
