EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description How could a manatee with its whiskered face and distinctly rotund shape be mistaken for a seductive mermaid by ancient sailors? Manatees, the reclusive sea cows who love nothing more than to eat sea grass and sleep, are a marine mammal. They use their paddle-like tail to slowly cruise the coastal and inland waters of Florida. These sausage-shaped oddities have endeared themselves to us with their mysterious and gentle nature, shy curiosity, and whimsical face. Manatees: The Gentle Giants steps back from all of the controversy surrounding this endangered animal to present a photographic portrait of manatees just being manatees. This collection of photographs contains intimate portraits of mothers and calves as well as manatees doing amusing acrobatics and posing for the camera. Using his rapport with his subjects, the photographer captures not only the serene beauty of the springs, but also the manatees' natural curiosity and unusual physical traits. Many of the natural behaviors displayed in the pictures are surprising. The beautiful photographs are an excellent introduction to the personalities of these leisurely vegetarians. Readers who have fallen in love with manatees can use the lists of places where someone can see manatees either in captivity or in wild viewing areas. This book offers a priviledged glimpse into the world of the manatee narrating to us through photographs the beauty and drama that are these unique gentle giants. |

| Gentle Giants with Heart by Katherine McKinley (New Jersey) 5 Stars July 05, 2006 Hello. I bought this book for my son who loves manatees. Having lived in Florida, we would seek out manatees whenever we could. The photography by Mr. Sweeney of these mammals is stunning. I enjoyed reading about the manatees, as there were many facts I did not know. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys manatees or books about underwater animals. It is a great book to have out as many people are unaware of these 'gentle giants' and enjoy reading about them when they see the book.
| | An Inspiring Book and a Wonderful Resource by Robert Watson (Florida) 5 Stars May 31, 2006 This book has the best manatee photos I have seen in print and lots of them! I have been swimming with the manatees and these pictures capture the beauty and magic of that wonderful morning spent with my family and the amazing manatees. This book will either bring back great memories or inspire people to get out there and meet manatees in person. The list in the back is a good list of places to see manatees around the US. The pictures capture manatees in every typical (and sometimes humorous) behaviour .

Manatees, slow-moving and harmless plant-eating marine mammals, frequent the shallows of Florida's rivers and coastal ocean. These huge animals, which can be fifteen feet long and weigh 3,000 pounds, eat only aquatic plants. As the number of people living in Florida grows, the number of manatees shrinks, as a result of the development necessary to support the growing population. Many manatees fall victim to dwindling habitats, while others are struck and injured or killed by speedboats....
