Product Description
Product Description Author: Karen Steward. Copy Editor: Jill Ronsley. Doctors: Bound by Secrecy? Victims: Bound by Pain! is the inspirational, true story of a mother and daughter's 14-year journey for a cure to an agonizing and often misdiagnosed, debilitating disease known as adhesions. Melissa Steward was like any other happy, bubbly teen before illness struck at the age of 13. Doctors gave a diagnosis of Crohn's disease and prescribed corticosteroids as treatment. However, the powerful drugs proved futile against the constant pain, nausea and vomiting that tortured the teen day after day. Believing her daughter had been misdiagnosed, Karen Steward set out on her never-ending quest for an answer. Karen relates the riveting tale of their desperate cry for help and ultimate triumphant journey transversing the globe. Along the way, she provides a glimpse into the inner sanctum and frustrating maze of modern medicine. Doctors: Bound By Secrecy? Victims: Bound By Pain! unravels the mystery behind adhesions. Since adhesions don't show up on standard medical tests, victims are often misdiagnosed, treated for illnesses they do not have, labeled as depressed-and left to suffer-often in crippling pain. Surgery is the leading cause of adhesion formation, yet patients rarely are informed of the risk. Most ARD sufferers will spend seven to ten years wandering from one doctor to the next in an effort to find someone who will validate their pain and help put an end to the suffering. Doctors: Bound By Secrecy? Victims: Bound By Pain! is a heartrending story, told with a sense of humor and wit, of a mother trying to find hope and healing for her beloved, ailing daughter. It is an inspiring story of perseverance-against all medical odds-and the final triumph over an incapacitating illness. The writing of Melissa's trying journey opens the windows of knowledge to adhesion related disorder, (ARD), forever unmasking this prevalent, yet medically hushed condition.

An open look into a mother's heart... by D. F. Martin (Texas) 5 Stars

This book is a must for any parent who has a child suffering from a serious illness. Karen Steward is brutally honest, and unabashed about her struggles with God, and unsympathetic doctors. She does not sink to demonizing all physicians, which one might expect after the misery her family was put through. Rather, she gives credit where credit is due. Nonetheless, this is a no holds barred journey into the dark recesses of a mother' mind, driven repeatedly to the point of despair. Mrs. Steward is one tough parent, who somehow finds the will to take one more step to help her daughter. If you like authenticity, read this searing book. Then, give it to someone you know who is suffering from ARD (Adhesion Related Disorder). It may well be the answer...for which they so desperately seek. AWESOME BOOK ON ARD!! by Ruth Lawson 5 Stars

Thank you Karen and Melissa for sharing, with honesty and humor, the long and painful journey that you endured with the rest of the world, especially the medical community. As someone diagnosed with Adhesion Related Disorder (ARD), I know all about the pain, nausea, many partial bowel obstructions, one complete bowel obstruction, many wrong diagnosis, and friends that are tired of hearing about it and turn away from you. Fortunately, I have a wonderful husband that is always there for me. My own emotional battle with ARD resurfaced while reading about their struggle; however, they were victorius in the end thanks to a very caring surgeon. I couldn't put it down until I saw how it would end. This was an inspiration to me NOT to give up my own battle with pain. This is a very informative, and inspirational, book. A definite must read!!

Comments from an ARD sufferer by Kristine M. Lovaas (Minneapolis, MN) 5 Stars

I, too, am an ARD sufferer. I only discovered Karen's beautifully written book the day after I came home from having surgery for adhesion removal. I am one of the lucky ones in that it only took me 2 years to find a surgeon who was willing to help me. It's only been 2 weeks and I feel like a completely different person. So much of what Karen and her daughter encountered in dealing with the medical community really hit close to home for me, as I experienced many of the same things. I laughed and cried as Karen described what her daughter and their family went through on their long journey. Karen writes so well with much insight. This is a great book for anyone to read! I contacted Karen after I got the book. She was kind enough to respond and to offer her support. I'm also proudly wearing the ARD pins that she had designed to help promote awareness of this debilitating disease. Thank you, Karen, for telling the story that is so close to home for more of us than many know!

Faith and Persistence Triumph Over the Ignorance of Detractors by Jacqueline L. Jones (Jackson, TN) 4 Stars

Doctors: Bound by Secrecy? Victims: Bound by Pain! With amazing honesty and humor, Karen Steward shares the painful journey to find help for her daughter, Melissa. You can find inspiration in this book if you have ever struggled to conquer any confusing illness. Though the book is uplifting, be prepared for other emotions that may surface as you read. I stopped reading near the beginning and couldn't continue for quite awhile. Karen's honest accounting of her trials broke open the emotional wounds I still carried from my own battles with illness. Only someone who has been there can understand how unloving some loved ones can be, how unprofessional some professionals can be, and how unchristlike some Christians can be toward a person who is hurting so badly. But the book is not a pity party in print. Karen helps you laugh through the tears as she calls upon real faith to find solutions for her daughter's adhesion related disorder (ARD). This heartfelt story just might inspire you to do the same for your own illness.
