Very practical method for transforming everyday activities into health and vibrancy. by Steven E. Spraragen (Oakland, CA) 5 Stars
November 23, 2009
I bought this book as required reading for Esther Gohkale's course. Both the book and the course provided practical advice on maintaining back and whole-body health. Though the book includes many exercises to tone and stretch muscles to support healthy posture, it focuses primarily on how to sit, walk, lie down, and bend over to safeguard the integrity of the spine and joints. In doing so, it transforms these daily activities into health-giving exercises. The logical behind the work is based on her exploration and analysis of more traditional cultures where back pain, knee and hip replacements, shoulder surgeries, etc., are nearly non-existent, and not needed. Despite the fact that people in these traditional cultures carry heavy weights on their heads, bend in fields for 8 hours a day, walk miles, etc., the bodily woes that one might expect with such exertions never manifest. I highly recommend this book for everyBODY, especially those of you who deal with back, shoulder or joint pain. Thank you Esther for helping bring us all back into balance and alignment.

Real Help for Back Pain by John Christianson (Garberville, CA) 5 Stars

I was delighted to find out about Esther Gokhale and her book 8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back from a July, 2009 San Francisco Chronicle article. I found the book to be quite insightful and very helpful for becoming more aware of my posture and use.I have followed up my book purchase by attending a three day intensive workshop with Esther and her daughter Maya at their EG Wellness Center in Palo Alto, California. The workshop very nicely amplifies the themes of the book, but the book stands on its own. I have bought 3 additional copies of the book for my sister and friends. One of these friends was slowly recovering from her second back fusion operation when I gave her a copy of Esther's book. My friend told me that she found Esther's suggestions in her book quite compatible with the treatments her physical therapist, acupuncturist and massage therapist were giving her. She also found the sections in Esther's book on stretchlying in bed with strategically positioned pillows especially helpful. My friend just gave me a thank you card which she closed with the statement, "I think it's a beautiful book. I am currently pain free."

A real help by Sharon E. Jokela (CA) 5 Stars

I am a web designer/programmer who has (had) the horrible habit of parking my body in a nose-to-screen slump for too many hours and leaving it there while I think. Otherwise, I'm pretty athletic - but was beginning to notice creaks and aches. After reading about the book in the San Francisco Chronicle, I bought it. I have been using the methods in this book for about 4 months. And have had the StretchSit Cushion for 3 months. I am feeling terrific and taller by 1/3 an inch. It is such a benefit to learn ways of helping/maintaining oneself - stretching the spine and correcting posture flaws while working and sleeping. Who would have thought! The creaks and aches are already mostly gone. The book's images and explanations are very easy to follow and give intuitive guidance which makes the concepts stick. My ham strings are still mostly like cement, but my inner corset is developing at a fine pace.

Back-Pain Victims - there's hope! by Linda G. Steenman (San Francisco, CA) 5 Stars

Esther Gokhale's book is a must have for anyone with spine problems, back or neck pain. I have had chronic low back and neck pain for many years and have tried various therapies, chiropractic, accupuncture, massage, exercises, etc., none of which helped. I was about at the end of my tether when I read an article in the newspaper about Esther, her background and the research that went into writing this book. Esther's methods are simple and take very little time to do. They are based on correct posture and movement and can be easily incorporated into your daily life. I have never experienced such quick results from what seems like such little effort. I highly recommend this book. Linda Steenman

Not just another back book - a whole different and effective approach by Mary Maddux 5 Stars

After working at tucking my pelvis, per instructions of physical therapists and chiropractors, my lower back pain was worsening. A simple adjustment in posture, which made sense intuitively and in terms of Gokhale's logic and evidence, has made all the difference. Even before attempting any of the lessons in the book, a shift in how I held my pelvis brought a lot of relief. More recently, I've been dealing with pain higher up than the original problem. This book helped me to understand what has been causing this pain and once again a change in posture, use of the "corset" muscles, has helped relieve that pain. I haven't been able to discipline myself to follow all the lessons, but I've been able to gradually incorporate the knowledge in the book into my posture and body mechanics. It is as if the book has triggered my body's wisdom and my own intuition. This is truly a different approach. I feel this is an extremely important book as it could change the current understanding of what correct posture is. As far as I can tell, what's considered correct is quite dysfunctional. I'd recommend that anyone with back pain read this book before investing a lot of time, money and energy in another approach!
