EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description A year in the making, Sandra Ramacher has released Healing Foods: Cooking for Celiacs, Colitis, Crohns and IBS, a visually stunning and intelligently written cookbook. It is specifically designed to please and inspire all those who suffer from these debilitating intestinal diseases, as well as those who already live happier lives thanks to the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (TM). This book strictly adheres to the diet prescribed by Elaine Gottschall in her revolutionary book Breaking The Vicious Cycle. The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is a strict grain-free, lactose-free, and sucrose-free dietary regimen intended for those suffering from Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The SCDiet has proven to be highly successful for many who suffer from various bowel disorders as well as the many related problems which actually stem from imbalances in the intestinal tract. The diet was first proposed by Dr. Sydney Haas and brought to public attention by Elaine Gottschall, a biochemist who researched the diet to help heal her daughter who was suffering from severe ulcerative colitis. Her book Breaking The Vicious Cycle has sold over 1 million copies and relieved suffering for countless thousands. |

| | Sandra Ramacher is an angel! by existential1 (Brooklyn, NY) 5 Stars July 20, 2009 I've had digestive problems my entire life--my mom always just said I had a "sensitive stomach." At 30 I finally began seeing a doctor about it and was diagnosed with IBD. I love love love food and cooking, and as a vegetarian didn't think the SCD would work for me. Sandra has been so wonderful--she reads and responds to all of the emails she receives! She gave me advice how to follow the SCD recipes by substituting pumpkin or mushrooms for meat. Mushrooms upset my stomach, so I've been trying different squashes and roots. The four-day intro diet outlined in Breaking the Vicious Cycle was extremely difficult to follow, but after a day of it I noticed a huge difference. Some of the metric/imperial and temperature conversions are a bit off, but it's easy to adjust. It's a commitment, but the pain that follows pasta and bread isn't worth it. Thank you Elaine and Sandra!
| | Lots of Good Info, but Not Practical by WriterMom (WNY, USA) 3 Stars July 14, 2009 I purchased this book in hopes of finding some simple, every-day recipes to use for myself and my family. We have different members with a history of IBS, corn intolerance, and autism. The introduction, general info, and directions for recipes are clear, informative, and relatively simple to follow. However, since I don't care for yogurt and don't consume cauliflower, lima beans, lamb, veal, or salmon on a regular basis, the recipes were impractical for me and my family. Unfortunately one of my daughters also cannot tolerate tomatoes, which are used quite frequently throughout this book. The photos are beautiful and I did find some very nice recipes for breads, desserts, and a couple of main dishes and salads. I ended up passing this book on to someone I met that has Crohn's.
| | over complicated recipes by Susan A. Manning (wisconsin) 3 Stars June 29, 2009 I was looking for a recipe book for IBS that I could use with ingredients I have everyday in my kitchen
The recipes in this book are very complex and use ingredients that you don't always commonly find in your kitchen.
