EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description Benzo-Wise: A Recovery Companion is a 'must read' for those in any stage of discontinuing benzodiazepine tranquillisers such as Valium, Xanax, Ativan and Rivotril/Klonopin, their relatives, counsellors, doctors and other caregivers. It is also proving to be invaluable to people addicted to or withdrawing from antidepressants, alcohol, painkillers and other drugs. The author integrates her extensive personal journey through benzo withdrawal with her mental health counselling experience to provide an easy to read, practical and comprehensive recovery guide. She maintains a logical, balanced and responsible tone throughout and in doing so, takes the reader into the realm of withdrawal from an emotionally safe perspective. The book is filled with useful information including how to manage psychological symptoms, how to use breathing and grounding techniques, positive self-talk and other tools to cope, what stimulants to avoid, tips for counsellors, doctors and other carers, and insightful journal logs and reflections. The appendices include an A to Z of symptoms, benzodiazepine equivalence table and resources guide. The author was prescribed a benzodiazepine for a medical condition and did not have anxiety, depression or any other psychological problem prior to taking the drug. By sharing her challenging experience, she confirms that the psychological symptoms many users experience when withdrawing are mainly organic in origin and not always due to underlying anxiety as they are often told. She has skillfully managed to make a book about prescribed drug dependency and recovery uplifting and encouraging. It is enriched by her experience, and her courage and determination to remain optimistic will inspire and give every reader hope. This is exactly the resource you've been looking for. As you read it you will be guided through your stages to recovery with the reassuring feeling of your hand gently being held. |

| | A Must Read for Every Benzo Victim and Support Person by Geraldine Burns (Boston, MA) 5 Stars August 28, 2009 For years people have asked me to write a book on my experience with tranquilizer withdrawal and I just hadn't done it yet. I feel that I never have to write that book now because Baylissa has done such a wonderful job in her book that I feel comfortable knowing what I wanted to do, has been done. Only someone going through the pain of withdrawing from this class of drug can understand the pain and suffering and the amount of support and understanding we need and Baylissa has done a fantasic job in her book with not only sharing her experience, but giving sound advice to help someone through their experience. I cannot say enough how much I am recommending this book to anyone who needs to have validation and reassurance that you will get your life back after your withdrawal from tranquilizers.
| | Benzo-Wise: Brilliant and Powerful! by M James 5 Stars August 10, 2009 I discovered the book Benzo-Wise while searching for a source that would offer tips for coping with benzo withdrawal. Once I started reading this book, I could not put it down. The author described in detail her benzo experience which began when she was prescribed a benzo for a facial tic. Having had no previous psychological issues, this woman was clearly a victim of the destructive course benzo usage can take. Yet, she remained focused and wrote detailed accounts of her experience. She now invites the reader to walk through her personal jouney with her to discover coping mechanisms and to gain a better understanding of the reality of benzo usage.
I strongly disagree with the person who gave this book a two star rating. This book is reality and the author opened herself to share with others the true magnitude of what life on benzos is like and how to be a survivor. This includes how to overcome the negatives to reach a new level of hope and healing. Written responsibly and coherently, the author draws the reader in from the first page and holds their attention throughout the book where she leaves them uplifted and inspired. It's very powerful and I was inspired and enlightened by the knowledge I gained from this brilliant book.
| | Very intense retelling of a protracted benzo withdrawal by Jackie51 (Oakland, CA) 2 Stars August 01, 2009 I am glad others received benefit from this book, that's a good thing. I cannot
say that I feel the same. While I am sure this author had a very rough time
dealing with benzo withdrawal, I did not find all her retelling comforting or
uplifting at all. I think she had a helluva dramatic story to tell and is
quite detailed in her account. I would have liked to read more of a variety of people's experiences, thereby establishing that withdrawal/tapering is very individual and unique. She lost her job, home, husband left her. Yet in the beginning she states how she had no psychological problems "at all". I find it hard to believe that one can blame all this on the drug. I think there were personality issues at hand here, and what I came away from after
reading this short little book was only one "take" on how it can go. And it
was a very high drama telling of a protracted withdrawal syndrome. Somehow all of
the talk of "thinking positively towards healing" and ongoing affirmations that "I
am fine and getting well" in the midst of a pretty intense bunch of symptoms falls
flat for me. I do beieve in taking care of yourself emotionally, spiritually and
physically, especially when trying to pry your brain & body off of benzos, and I
know the author was trying to help paint a picture of how she did that. Just wish
more experiences, less frightening, extensive and prolonged, were presented. They exist all over the net, so I know they are out there. This author warns us in many places not to read online benzo experiences that are "negative" and "particularly horrible", yet her story is pretty damn scary. That being said, I wish everyone success and tenacity with this experience if you are dealing with this challenging issue.
| | Proof that benzo withdrawal isn't all in the head by Grace Virtue 5 Stars July 08, 2009 I won't repeat what the other readers have said. The book is brilliant. What makes it different is that it is uplifting from beginning to end. This book proves that all the withdrawal symptoms are caused by the drug and not any other problems. V Baylissa Frederick did not have anxiety or mental issues. Her doctor prescribed the benzo for a medical problem but what she experienced was the same as those who were prescribed the benzos for anxiety. Just what is needed to prove benzo withdrawal is not all in the head.

| I'm Dancing As Fast As I Can by Barbara Gordon (Author)
I'm Dancing as Fast as I Can was a huge best seller. It was made into a movie starring Jill Clayberg. The book was way ahead of its time when first published. When the book was written the danger of addiction to prescription drugs was barely recognized and the authority of doctors was virtually sacrosanct. But one woman's honesty - Barbara Gordon's honesty - changed all that. I'm Dancing as Fast as I Can is just as relevant today as a survivor story and as an inspiration to...

He proves his argument by documenting dozens...
