| Some good ideas, poor format by Jennifer Shambach Painter (Columbus, OH) 2 Stars November 19, 2009 I have used this book for two quarters to teach Medical Assisting students. Before I could offer my opinion of the book, many of my students commented that it was poorly organized and highly repetitive. The book takes 568 pages and 27 chapters to convey material that could be reduced to perhaps 300 pages and 15 chapters (that is generous).
My critique as an instructor is the poor citing of sources, and the poor choice of sources in many instances (such as "Redbook" magazine and a variety of self-help books). I have not encountered ONE journal article cited. There are also some pretty wild claims without basis, such as generalizations of Americans as independent thinkers who would not go along with a corrupt authority figure as Germans did in the past (I used Milgram's "Obedience" studies to refute that).
It does read easily, however, for the students and it has some good ideas for conversation starters. There are some jewels in the book, but I am looking forward to our change in January.
| | Understanding Human Behavior by Penetralia 5 Stars October 17, 2009
"Understanding Human Behavior" is an excellent resource for students and those interested or operating in the behavioral sciences. The text is written in a way that is easy to understand and is chock full of examples and illustrations.
Although we purchased an older edition, the bulk of data was not outdated, and most certainly applied to human behavior today.
| | book in poor condition by L. Ignacio 1 Stars July 31, 2008 there's a reason I picked this product. It wasn't the cheapest on the list but the description was good. I received the book and it has an extra bulk to it because of excessive use of stickies. The worst part of it all is that it cannot be removed and it's making the book lopsided. If I'd known this, I would have just bought the cheapest out of the list.
| | Regarding Naturopathy's Essential Science-Ejected Vitalism, 2004: by Robert J. Cullen (Bridgeport, CT) 5 Stars January 22, 2008 Vitalism is a profoundly science-ejected concept, though many CAM or 'natural health' cabals falsely claim that vitalism survives scientific scrutiny.
I quote:
"the basic belief of naturopathy is that the body has 'vital force,' the power to heal itself. The naturopathic physician searches for causes of her client's health problem and develops a plan for stimulating the body's own vital force [...] the vital force can be weakened by unhealthful diet [etc....] when the vital force has been weakened [etc. p.520...] the focus is on strengthening the vital force [p.521]."
