Molecular Building Blocks for Nanotechnology: From Diamondoids to Nanoscale Materials and Applications (Topics in Applied Physics) (No. 111)

Molecular Building Blocks for Nanotechnology: From Diamondoids to Nanoscale Materials and Applications (Topics in Applied Physics) (No. 111)
by G. Ali Mansoori (Editor), Thomas F. George (Editor), Lahsen Assoufid (Editor), Guoping Zhang (Editor)

This book deals with a "bottom-up" approach to building nanostructured systems, where one starts with atoms and molecules, which constitute the molecular building blocks (MBBs), and assembles them to build a nanostructured material. Nanotechnology MBBs are distinguished for their unique properties. They include, for example, graphite, fullerene, carbon nanotubes, diamondoids, nanowires, nanocrystals and amino acids. All these MBBs, and more, are candidates for various applications in...

Springer Handbook of Nanotechnology

Springer Handbook of Nanotechnology
by Bharat Bhushan (Editor)

Since 2004 the Springer Handbook of Nanotechnology has established itself as the definitive reference in the nanoscience and nanotechnology area. It integrates the knowledge from nanofabrication, nanodevices, nanomechanics, Nanotribology, materials science, and reliability engineering in just one volume. Beside the presentation of nanostructures, micro/nanofabrication, and micro/nanodevices, special emphasis is on scanning probe microscopy, nanotribology and nanomechanics, molecularly thick...

Low-Dimensional Molecular Metals (Springer Series in Solid-State Sciences)

Low-Dimensional Molecular Metals (Springer Series in Solid-State Sciences)
by Naoki Toyota (Author), Michael Lang (Author), Jens Müller (Author)

Assimilating new research in the field of low-dimensional metals, this monograph provides a detailed overview of the current status of research on quasi-one- and two-dimensional molecular metals, describing normal-state properties, magnetic field effects, superconductivity, and the phenomena of interacting p and d electrons. It will be useful not only for frontier researchers with a broad interest in low-dimensional electronic and magnetic properties, but also for graduate students of...

EDITORIAL REVIEWS

Product Description
The development of advanced dielectric photonic structures has enabled tremendous control over the propagation and manipulation of light. Structures such as waveguides, splitters, mixers, and resonators now play a central role in the telecommunications industry. This book will discuss an exciting new class of photonic devices, known as surface plasmon nanophotonic structures. Surface plasmons are easily accessible excitations in metals and semiconductors and involve a collective motion of the conduction electrons. These excitations can be exploited to manipulate electromagnetic waves at optical frequencies ("light") in new ways that are unthinkable in conventional dielectric structures. The field of plasmon nanophotonics is rapidly developing and impacting a wide range of areas including: electronics, photonics, chemistry, biology, and medicine. The book will highlight several exciting new discoveries that have been made, while providing a clear discussion of the underlying physics, the nanofabrication issues, and the materials considerations involved in designing plasmonic devices with new functionality. The book is aimed at researchers and students interested in entering the field of plasmon nanophotonics, while serving as a reference to scientists already active in this area of research. It is written at the level of a first year graduate student with some background in electromagnetic theory and working knowledge of Maxwell’s equations.

Plasmonics: Fundamentals and Applications
by Stefan A. Maier (Author)

Considered one of the major fields of photonics of the beginning 21st century, plasmonics offers the potential to confine and guide light below the diffraction limit and promises a new generation of highly miniaturized photonic devices. Offering both a comprehensive introduction to the field and an extensive overview of the current state of the art, "Plasmonics: Fundamentals and Applications" should be of great value to the newcomer and to the experienced researcher. The first part of the book...

Principles of Nano-Optics

Principles of Nano-Optics
by Lukas Novotny (Author), Bert Hecht (Author)

Nano-optics is the study of optical phenomena and techniques on the nanometer scale, that is, near or beyond the diffraction limit of light. It is an emerging field of study, motivated by the rapid advance of nanoscience and nanotechnology which require adequate tools and strategies for fabrication, manipulation and characterization at this scale. In Principles of Nano-Optics the authors provide a comprehensive overview of the theoretical and experimental concepts necessary to understand and...

Nanophotonics with Surface Plasmons (Advances in Nano-Optics and Nano-Photonics)

Nanophotonics with Surface Plasmons (Advances in Nano-Optics and Nano-Photonics)
by Vladimir M. Shalaev PhD (Editor), Satoshi Kawata (Editor)

Current developments in optical technologies are being directed toward nanoscale devices with subwavelength dimensions, in which photons are manipulated on the nanoscale. Although light is clearly the fastest means to send information to and from the nanoscale, there is a fundamental incompatibility between light at the microscale and devices and processes at the nanoscale. Nanostructured metals which support surface plasmon modes can concentrate electromagnetic (EM) fields to a small fraction...
