Product Description
There has been tremendous emphasis in unmanned aerial vehicles, both of fixed (airplanes) and rotary wing (vertical take off and landing, helicopters) types over the past ten years. Applications span both civilian and military domains, the latter being the most important at this stage. This edited book provides a solid and diversified reference source related to basic, applied research and development on small and miniature unmanned aerial vehicles, both fixed and rotary wing. As such, the book offers background information on the evolution of such vehicles over the years, followed by modeling and control fundamentals that are of paramount importance due to unmanned aerial vehicle model complexity, nonlinearity, coupling, inhirent instability and parameter values uncertainty. Aspects of navigation, including visual-based navigation and target tracking are discussed, followed by applications to attitude estimation on micro unmanned aerial vehicles, autonomous solar unmanned aerial vehicle, biomimetic sensing for autonomous flights in near-earth environments, localization of air-ground wireless sensor networks, decentralized formation tracking, design of an unmanned aerial vehicle for volcanic gas sampling and design of an on-board processing controller for miniature helicopters.

Commercial interest for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) has seen a steady increase over the last decade. Nevertheless, UAS operations have remained almost exclusively military. This is mainly due to the lack of a regulatory framework that allows only limited public and civil UAS operations with usually crippling restrictions. Although efforts from the Federal Aviation Administration and its partners are already underway to integrate UAS in the National Airspace System (NAS), the appropriate...

Unmanned Aircraft Systems: International Symposium On Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, UAV08
by Kimon P. Valavanis (Editor), Paul Oh (Editor), Les A. Piegl (Editor)

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) have seen unprecedented levels of growth during the last decade in both military and civilian domains. It is anticipated that civilian applications will be dominant in the future, although there are still barriers to be overcome and technical challenges to be met. Integrating UAS into, for example, civilian space, navigation, autonomy, see-detect-and-avoid systems, smart designs, system integration, vision-based navigation and training, to name but a few...

UAV Cooperative Decision and Control: Challenges and Practical Approaches (Advances in Design and Control)

UAV Cooperative Decision and Control: Challenges and Practical Approaches (Advances in Design and Control)
by Steven Rasmussen (Author), Tal Shima (Author), Tal Shima (Editor), Steven J. Rasmussen (Editor)

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly used in military missions because they have the advantages of not placing human life at risk and of lowering operation costs via decreased vehicle weight. These benefits can be fully realized only if UAVs work cooperatively in groups with an efficient exchange of information. This book provides an authoritative reference on cooperative decision and control of UAVs and the means available to solve problems involving them.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle End to End Support Considerations

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle End to End Support Considerations
by John G. Drew (Author)

Evaluating current end to end support postures for certain UAV systems revealed that fielding a new capability quickly can have cibsequences for its long term support and for testing and evaluation, training, and plans for future enhancements.

System Architecture of Small Autonomous UAVs

System Architecture of Small Autonomous UAVs
by Marek Musial (Author)

With the miniaturization of processing units, sensors, and communication devices rapidly progressing, interest in small autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is currently expanding exponentially. This book provides a survey of the requirements and suitable solution approaches that are typically connected with the system architecture of small autonomous UAVs. Remarkably, there is not as much variation in the set of these requirements as one might at first glance expect. Any autonomous UAV...
