Product Description
This comprehensive text provides a detailed overview of the molecular mechanisms underpinning the development of cancer and its treatment. Written by an international panel of researchers, specialists and practitioners in the field, the text discusses all aspects of cancer biology from the causes, development and diagnosis through to the treatment of cancer. The text offers in-depth coverage of traditional areas of study, while also discussing areas of controversy and emerging importance and highlighting future directions for research. Common cancers such as lung, breast, colon and skin cancer are used to illustrate key concepts and fundamental biological processes throughout the text. In addition, each chapter includes key points, chapter summaries, text boxes, and topical references for added comprehension and review. Offering up-to-date coverage of recent studies and discoveries, as well as a solid grounding in the key concepts in the field, this book will be an excellent text for upper-level courses in the biology of cancer, for medical students and qualified practitioners preparing for higher exams, and for researchers and teachers in the field.

Complete and Well Written by John Matlock (Winnemucca, NV) 5 Stars
June 08, 2006
There are any number of books on cancer from little phamplets for the new patient to heavy duty books that summarize the current research going on in specialized areas. This book is aimed at the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate student with some background in biology. It covers cancer from nearly every aspect. It begins with a general introduction to cancer and its impact from around the world. It goes on to cover the current state of research in every significant area. The writers are a who's who of cancer researchers, where each major subject area is written by a specialist in that area. The editors are researchers in their own right. They jointly run the cancer research group at the University of Warwick which has produced significant findings. For a book written in this manner, this book is surprisingly well written and understandable. This is the job of a good editor and they have done it well.

Molecular Biology of Cancer: Mechanisms, Targets, and Therapeutics

Molecular Biology of Cancer: Mechanisms, Targets, and Therapeutics
by Lauren Pecorino (Author)

Many of the cells in our body undergo tightly regulated replication to enable growth to occur and to ensure that damaged or worn out tissues are replaced. Regulation is mediated via many different mechanisms. It is when these mechanisms fail, and regulation is lost, that cancer can result. Recent advances in molecular cell biology have greatly expanded our understanding of the processes and mechanisms which underpin the regulation of cell replication, and what is happening at the molecular...

Magic Cancer Bullet: How a Tiny Orange Pill May Rewrite Medical History

Magic Cancer Bullet: How a Tiny Orange Pill May Rewrite Medical History
by Daniel Vasella (Author), Robert Slater (Author)

When the first results from patient trials appeared on Dr. Daniel Vasella's desk in April 1999, the chairman and CEO of Novartis sensed that an important chapter of medical history was about to be rewritten. The results indicated that Gleevec, the tiny orange capsule -- the development of which he had spearheaded -- was working wonders to arrest a life-threatening form of blood cancer. Here, for the first time, Dr. Vasella recounts the step-by-step challenges of bringing this revolutionary...
