Wonderful book by Mary E. Monastesse 5 Stars

I am a nurse practitioner and I work every day in a clinic with patients who have HIV. Having worked in infectious diseases for 11 years, I had a desire to teach classes on HIV, but felt that in order to do that, I would need a better understanding of the immune system. After trying to find out everything I could about the immune system, I became frustrated. I was reading articles and book sections that were very hard to understand. I am in the process of reading "How the Immune System Works" now, and I think it's great. It's definitely an in-depth book, but the explanations of complex relationships are broken down into an easier-to-understand format. I love the book and recommend it to all students who are studying the immune system.

Great intro book by Immuno Basics (NJ) 4 Stars

This book saved me (and my grade). I was thrown into an immunology course where tiny details were given from day one, and I had no immunology background - this book gave me what I needed to get the basics down pat.

Nice overview for the immunology newb or someone needing a refresher by Brittany Sears (Gainesville, FL) 4 Stars

Sompayrac's "How the Immune System Works" is a great Cliff Notes-style guide to immunology. He manages to cover almost all major components of the immune system in this little, 100-page book. It is written in a very colloquial fashion, with lots of easy metaphors and analogies (he states in the introduction that he wanted to write a book in the same fashion as he would give a lecture). However, because it is so small, it is lacking in some regards: for example, the classical complement pathway is not covered. My biggest gripe with the book is that despite its functional usefulness, Sompayrac does not address much in the way of evolution (with the important exception of immunopathology), and really leans towards the intelligent design end of the spectrum with constant references to "Mother Nature's design..." or "Mother Nature doesn't want...". Take home message: great intro or refresher to immunology, but be prepared to roll your eyes if you're a graduate student.

This book is AWESOME! It is extremely easy to read and explains everything in the easiest terms! I am a first year med student and did not have a good background in Immunology and this was just perfect! It is the perfect base for which to build knowledge on!

Complicated topic made simple!!! by Jill Simpson (Madison, WI) 5 Stars

I was tired of looking things up in my cell bio textbook and on wikipedia, so I bought this and am very pleasantly surprised! I used to be so frustrated by immunology, but Sompayrac takes a tough subject and makes it easy to understand and ENGAGING. It reads almost like a good novel, and really helps you get the big picture (big enough to not be swamped in detail, but detailed enough that you leave feeling like you have a great grasp of the material). Highly recommended to med students, bio majors, or just about anyone interested in learning about the immune system!
