Product Description
Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge.

Even Better Than the First! by The_Book_Queen 5 Stars
December 01, 2009
Last year, The Hunger Games received high ratings from fans all over. Then we spent what seemed like an eternity waiting, anxiously, for the sequel. Finally, it's here-- and believe me, it's just as amazing, if not even a tiny bit more so, than her first novel! Suzanne Collins does a brilliant job at creating a rich, detailed world, while telling a brutally honest story, not one that's sugar coated and perfect. Catching Fire continues the story of Katniss and Peeta, the first dual winners of the deadly Hunger Games. Now that they're 'safely' out of the arena, no longer having to fight for their very life, you'd think they'd be able to live out the rest of their life in peace, right? Wrong! The Capitol realizes that their control over the various districts is slowly being tested, pushed to the limits, and it's all because of Katniss and Peeta's defiance in the arena. As the districts start to rise up against the Capitol, they realize that they need to get rid of the 'spark' that started it all-- Katniss. But how, without alerting the citizens of their plot? Enter the 'surprise' rules for the 75th anniversary Hunger Games! The only names added to the reaping will be the surviving tributes from previous games, one male and one female from each district. Which, naturally, means it's back into the arena for Katniss and Peeta-- and they both know that the Capitol has no plans for allowing them to come back out alive, especially Katniss. I won't go into too many details, I really don't want to ruin the book for fellow fans out there. But I will say that Collin manages to throw new twists and turns into Catching Fire just when you least expect it! And the characters are just as intense and unique as they were before-- along with the relationship between our two favorite winners. The one thing that bothered me is I wish Katniss would wake up and realize that Peeta's the guy for her. As nice as Gale as, there's no fire, no real connection between them in the story. Sure, she speaks fondly of their childhood, but since the beginning of book one, Collins has shown us more of Peeta than Gale, and personally I can't say that I'm upset about it. But that's a whole other story--- and one that we'll just have to wait until the next book to figure out for sure! Overall: 5/5 STARS! A wonderful, action packed novel that's even better than the first one, Catching Fire has everything in it, from witty characters and dialogue to intense suspense and adventure. And let's not forget the love triangle going on between poor Gale, Katniss, and Peeta! In other words, easily one of the BEST YA series ever! What are you waiting for? Enter the terrifying yet interesting world of Panem today!

Great Series by ZMoney (Colorado) 5 Stars

I was very surprised by The Hunger Games when I read it a year ago and it became one of my favorite books I read in the past few years. Catching Fire, the second in the trilogy, was a very fun quick read. Being that it is the middle book it does fall into that realm that a lot of middle books do of a mop up of some plot points from the first and a bridge to the finally but I sill enjoyed it very much. We are given a little bit more insight into the other 11 districts and this book forcuses on the impending rebellion that the main character Katniss has unknowingly become the symbol of. I am such a fan of the word Suzanne Collins has created that my only complaint about the book is that I wish it was longer. There are several sections of the book that we only get descriptions of what happened but don't actually get to "follow" the character for those events. I wish instead of summarizing what had happened, the author would have let us follow the character there. The story in this book takes place over the year between the Hunger Games in the first book and the Hunger Games scheduled the year after so I understand that would of been a lot to cover. This is a great book in an incredible series. I highly recommend.

One of the best books I've ever read by Sab H. (Houston, Tx) 5 Stars

I'm still in shock about this book. Seriously, one of the best books I've ever read. She has this amazing way to end each chapter so socking that you are literally unable to put it down. I mean, as a big reader I already have practice in the dreadful art of putting down books that are consuming, but this was something else entirely. After the first few chapters my body reacted on its own: when I saw the chapter was about to end, my heart would start racing for no reason yet. So this is my recommendation for the few who haven't read this yet, when you're planning to stop reading soon, close it in the middle of the chapter it's the only way you will manage to stop. The plot was excellent, the character beyond excellent and the writing was... excellent! I have no complains at all except the fact that, why would she end it like that? Why would she leave her faithful readers so so so desperate? I need the third book right now! (Rumored title is The Victors) This is my Absolute favorite series now, and I recommend it to everyone! - NOTE: It contains a lot of violence.

Great 2nd book by S. Fuller 4 Stars
November 30, 2009
I really was surprised that the 2nd book was able to keep me interested as much as the first. However, I was a little disappointed for two reasons. First, I was hoping the Author would have picked up EXACTLY where she left off in book 1. I wanted to SEE the reunion between Katniss and her family...and Gale. As a reader, I felt cheated that we didn't get to "experience" it, we were only "told" about it. Second, I didn't like that they had to participate in an additional Hunger Games...but it was ok. Seemed somewhat "been there, done that". Those two complaints aside, I really enjoyed book 2 and cannot wait until Book 3 hits the shelves!

A further glimpse into the world of the Games by Joshua Mauthe (Nashville, TN) 5 Stars

While I really enjoyed The Hunger Games greatly, I have to admit that I wasn't quite sure what merited a sequel. The original book is seemingly a self-contained tale, and while there were definitely some interesting threads left to explore, the question of how to explore them seemed to be the big hurdle. So kudos to Ms. Collins for not only writing a sequel that expands on the original in every way, but does so in such a way that it never feel unnecessary, unneeded, or unplanned. Essentially, Catching Fire does two things: it gives a more in-depth look at the dystopian world that Collins has created, and it pushes the plot towards something more far-reaching than just the games: the threat of rebellion and civil war. I said in my review of Hunger Games that Collins had created a fascinating world, and Catching Fire only confirms that; the more details and background we get on Panem, the more complex and fully-realized we begin to realize Collins's world is. There are some who have complained that Catching Fire suffers from "middle book" syndrome, in that it's largely setting up for the final book, but I disagree; there's enough new material here, enough exploration of Katniss and the other surviving main characters from the first book, and enough slow weaving of the plot threads (with some truly stunning twists along the way) that I found myself gripped. Katniss is a great character - far from the bland, do-nothing heroine of some major series (I won't name names, but it rhymes with Bi-light), she's complex, self-empowered, and not always the most heroic - in other words, she's a teenager, through and through. Much like The Hunger Games, Catching Fire is part adventure story, part detailing of the effects of war and battle, part social commentary, and it all somehow works, and (in my opinion) even outdoes the first book. It's a great read that solidifies my feelings about the series; I was curious about book two, but I absolutely cannot wait for book three to arrive.
